Sad but Beautiful
昨晚我的一个中国朋友带我去听了一场中国民间音乐会。
Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music.
其中一首二胡曲令我特别感动。
The piece which was played on the
erhu
especially moved me.
音乐是出奇的美，
The music was strangely beautiful,
但是在美的背后我感受到了强烈的悲伤和痛苦。
but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain.
这首曲子有个简单的名字

二泉映月
》
，
The piece had a simple name,
Erquan Yingyue,
但它是我听到过的最感人的乐曲之一。
but it was one of the most moving pieces of music that I’ve ever heard.
二胡声音听起来那么悲伤以至于我在听的时候也差点随着它哭了。
The
erhu
sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened.
后来我查看了

Later I looked up the history of
Erquan Yingyue
,
我开始理解音乐中蕴含的伤感。
and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
这首曲子是阿炳写成的，
The music was written by Abing,
于
1893
年出生在无锡市的一位民间音乐家。
a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893.
在他很小的时候，他妈妈就去世了。
His mother died when he was very young.
阿炳的父亲教他弹奏各种乐器，
Abing’s father taught him to play many musical instruments,
如鼓、笛子和二胡，
such as the drums,
dizi
and
erhu
,
到了
17
岁，阿炳就以他的音乐天赋闻名于众。
and by age 17, Abing was known for his musical ability.
然而，他父亲去世后，阿炳的生活走向低谷。
However, after his father died, Abing’ s life grew worse.
他很可怜，不仅那样还染上很严重的疾病又双目失明。
He was very poor. Not only that, he developed a serious illness and became blind.
好些年他都没有家。
For several years, he had no home.
他住在大街上以弹奏音乐来谋生。
He lived on the streets and played music to make money.
即使在他结了婚并有了家以后，
Even after Abing got married and had a home again,
他继续在城市大街上唱歌、弹曲。
he continued to sing and play on the streets.
他就这样表演了好多年。
He performed in this way for many years.
阿炳惊人的音乐技能让他在有生之年非常出名。
Abing’ s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime.
在他临终前，他会弹

By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music.
其中大部分是他自己写的。
Many of these were written by Abing himself.
遗憾的是，一共有六首曲子被录了下来传给后世人听，
It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear,
但时至今日他的好多作品依旧颇受人们喜爱。
but his popularity continues to this day.
