Should We Help Strangers?
We used to appreciate those who like to help strangers. But nowadays people tend to be very
cautious of helping strangers. Recently our class had a discussion about whether we should help
strangers. Opinions are divided on this topic.
Some think we should try to help others whether they are strangers or not. Helping others is a
virtue, and it will make our society more harmonious. Besides, to some extent, helping others is
helping oneself. We may come across some trouble and need others' help some day. If everyone
turns a blind eye to our trouble and turns a deaf ear to our appeal for aid just because we are
strangers to them, it's hard to imagine what our world will be like.
However, others are afraid that helping others can sometimes bring us trouble or even put
us in danger. Sometimes we are just misunderstood and thus have to pay the cost of kindness.
In my opinion, we should try our best to help others when they are in need of help, but we
should also protect ourselves to avoid getting into trouble. Only if everyone tries a little kindness,
will society be full of love and trust be established between people.

Text 1
W: I like this dress very much, but its color…
M: You know, Madam the bright yellow lights in the shop make things a little different here.
That’s why the blue dress appears green.
Text 2
W: Is Butch in the office?
M: No. He finishes work at 5. He’s at Alex’s. They are good friends.
W: Please tell him to call me.
M: Sure. He usually comes home before 8. He may call you then.
Text 3
W: Come on. We’re late.
M: No, we’re not. Remember, there’s no English class today. The teacher has a meeting. Let’s
have some coffee. The next class is an hour from now.
W: OK. Sound good.
Text 4
M: I ’m filling out the report. So, you were driving along Bay Avenue?
W: Yeah. I was driving along Bay. And suddenly, that man stopped real fast. I couldn’t stop in
time.
Text 5
W: My cousin is getting married in Paris this weekend, and I can’t decide whether to go.
M: It’s a long way, but I think you’ll have a good time.
Text 6
M: And today we have a familiar face on television, Angela Bond, the news reporter. Welcome,
Angela. Your job has taken you all over the world, hasn’t it?
W: Yes. I’ve reported from a number of countries in Asia and I’ve just returned from the United
States, then next week I will go to London.
M: Is the travelling what you enjoy about the job?
W: It’s certainly interesting, but it can be annoying never knowing where I’m going to be next
week! For me, the really exciting thing is being somewhere when a big news story is taking place
and seeing it develop.
M: Well, do you have much time for a social life?
W: It’s better now. I’m in Sydney and can see my boyfriend more often. My sister introduced us.
We have a lot in common. He’s a lawyer and I studied law at university. Also we found that we
lived in Hong Kong at the same time, although we never met.
M: What do you like to do in your free time?
W: Well, cooking is something new I’m trying. And one of the best things I’ve bought recently
was a boat and when I want to feel calm and peaceful I go for a sail on the river.
Text 7
W: Hello, Jerry. I have to choose the music for Parents’ Night. Would you like to help me?
M: Sure. Where do you want to start?
W: Well, for people of our age it’s no problem, we are familiar with each other and we know what
we like. But the parents’ taste are different.
M: We’ll have to choose something different for each group, won’t we?
W: That’s my poroblem.
M: OK, let’s start with some rock’n’roll for the moms and dads.
W: Right. And what about some jazz afterwards? Everyone likes that.
M: Great idea! Hey, why don’t we do something like line dancing with country and western
music?
W: You mean where everyone lines up on the floor next to each other and does the same steps to
the music. That should be a lot of fun and everyone---old and young---can join in.
M: It looks like you have almost everything ready. Come on, I’ll treat you to a soda.
W: Great!

OK everyone, now I need to say a few things about our visit to Staunton Theatre next Tuesday.
You need to be here at school at 5:50. We’ll meet by the back gate because the bus can’t stop at the
front one. We can’t leave any later than 6:00, as the play starts at 7:30.
We’re seeing a very interesting play called The Party by Andrew McVitie. It’s a comedy about a
birthday celebration. His works can be difficult to understand so you need to read the play in
advance. There is a copy for everyone which you can pick up from the school secretary. Do that as
soon as you can.
The full price of the theatre tickets is $18, but you’re all lucky, because you only have to pay $15
each. Could you let me have this money before Tuesday, please, and $2 for the bus?
Now, a lot of you have suggested going somewhere together afterwards. Well, the bus driver is
willing to come back a bit later, but there isn’t time for a big meal, so we’ll go to a café nearby for
an ice cream and a coffee.
