(2013·宁夏银川高二检测)
Few kids today are taught the value of sympathy(同情心). It seems so
hard for people to have sympathy for others and to understand what they
are going through.
As a child I was taught to try to make someone else happy. My mom
would tell me to say at least one kind word to someone every day. I admit
that it isn't very easy to do. But as soon as you see the look of thankfulness
in that person's eyes you just want to do as much as you can.
I had an experience with a guy people were always making fun of.
Every time I saw that happening, I knew in my heart that it was wrong. I
decided I would try to be his friend. I started playing with him and
introducing him to people. By just doing that I was making him so happy.
And I loved the fact that I was really making a difference in his life.
After a while I realized that he wasn't the kind of person everybody
thought he was. And to this day we are still really good friends. People have
almost completely stopped making fun of him. But he never changed. What
had changed was the hearts of others around him.
From this experience I've learned to be kind to other people. What I
did for my friend was so easy. And at the same time I had a lot of fun. So I
hope that everyone can say a kind word to someone else at least once a day.
I can promise you that it will be the best feeling you ever get, knowing that
one word can make someone's day a bit brighter.

A.one's attitude to others can be changed

3.We can infer from the last paragraph that ______.
A.having a lot of fun will help live a good life
B.it is a hard thing to say a kind word to others
C.a kind word may benefit both the speaker and the listener
D.few people know how to make someone's day a bit brighter
4.What's the purpose of the author writing the text?
A.To call on people to be kind to others.

Music which is original is individual and personal. That is to say,it can
be identified as belonging to a particular composer. It has particular
qualities, or a style, which are not copied from another. If you can recognize
the style of a composer , you will probably be able to tell that a certain
composition belongs to him or her even though you have never heard it
before. A basket - maker has the skill of weaving and interweaving his
materials to create colorful patterns, and an expert carpenter(木匠)has the
skill of joining together different shapes and sizes of wood to make a
beautiful piece of furniture. These skills may be referred to as
“workmanship”( 技 艺 ). Similarly , in music a composer organizes his
melodies(旋 律 ) and rhythms and combines sounds to create harmony. A
composer may be capable of thinking up very good, original tunes, yet if
tunes are poorly organized, that is, if the workmanship is poor, the final
result will not be to standard.
Good music expresses feelings in a way that is suitable to those feelings.
There may be joy, sorrow, fear, love, anger, or whatever. Bad music, on the
other hand, may confuse unrelated feelings, it may not express any
important feeling at all, or it may exaggerate some feelings and make them
vulgar, that is, cheap and ugly.
Good music will stand the test of time. It will not go out of fashion but
will continue to be enjoyed and respected long after it is first introduced. It
will gain a kind of permanent status while bad music will disappear and be
forgotten quickly. In pop music, where the general rule seems to be “the
newer the better”, the test of time is the hardest test of all to pass.
5.A piece of original music ______.
A.has a personal style
B.sounds very familiar to our ears
C.is one whose style you cannot recognize
D.can not be recognized as belonging to any composer
6.We can see good workmanship in ______.
A.different shapes and size of furniture
B.materials for creating colourful patterns
C . a piece of music with its melodies and rhythms organized in
harmony
D.a piece of music with very good, original tunes mixed together
7.This passage is concerned with ______.
A.how to compose music
B.how to enjoy music

There are many differences between America and China. The biggest
difference is traffic rules. In America there are too much more cars than in
China. But there are much fewer traffic jams and accidents in America
than in China. We hardly see traffic police in the street, but all cars obey
strictly traffic rules, and people hardly find that a car does not obey traffic
rules in the street.
About American traffic rules, there are many better terms, such as:
1. Stop line: There are stop lines in all crossing without traffic light
(some have two stop lines and others have four stop lines). All cars must
stop while meeting the stop line.
2. Traffic light: There is traffic light in the crossing of the road. Cars
may almost turn every direction. The traffic light can give signal step by
step including u-turn. There is a kind of middle lane of turning left. When
a car wants to turn left in the road, he may enter into the middle lane of
turning left and give a signal of turning left. When he thinks being safe, he
may turn left. In many conditions the order of passing is also given very
specifically. If people want to change lane or turn, they must look behind
and think being safe. Only so, they may do it.
3. Specific item: Such as parking, there are three kinds of lines (their
colours are white , blue or red) in the roadside. Every line may park
different kinds of cars. There are many streets in some residential areas(住
宅区) ,and there is a kind of rule that any car cannot park at any time or
any period time. In every parking , there are some special positions for
invalid(伤残的) people.
4. About the priority of passenger and car: At any case, passengers
have the priority to cars. And only after passengers have passed the road
and got the top of sidestep, cars may go ahead.
In general, traffic rules of America are very specific, convenient, safe
and humanizing.
8.Which of the following is NOT the reason why we can hardly see
traffic police in the street in America?
A.Traffic police are not very necessary because few cars break traffic
rules.
B.The traffic is very clear and there are few traffic jams and accidents
in the street.
C.There are so many cars in the street that the traffic police can't be
seen.
D.The effective traffic rules play an important part in the road safety.
9.Why is there a middle lane of turning left on the road?
A.It is designed for the cars that want to turn left.
B.It is very safe to drive there.
C.It is very convenient for the traffic police to find the cars that break
the rules.
D.The cars that want to turn left can easily give a signal of turning
left.
10 . Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the
passage?
A.In America, all cars in the crossing must stop when they meet the
stop line.
B.In America, any car cannot park in the streets in some residential
areas.
C.If people want to turn, they can obey the guide of the traffic police.
D.There are more traffic jams in China.

Yours ever,
Wei Hua
范文:
Dear_Wang_Tao,
I'm glad to know that you're going to enter college and it's my great
pleasure to give you some suggestions.
As far as I'm concerned, the ideal major which is suitable for you is
music. On the one hand, with the educational reform, there will be a
continuing need for music teachers in China. On the other hand, you have a
strong interest in music, which is essential to the making of a music teacher.
If you agree with me and want to realize your dream, you should study
hard and make friends with people who also study music from different
countries. Furthermore, you should try your best to have a good master of
the theory of music, which can help you succeed in the entrance exams.
Yours_ever,
Wei_Hua
