For displaced people, arriving in Greece marks an important milestone in their journey to a better life. In
camps run by the Greek government, they receive critical aid including housing, food, and medical treatment. And
now, thanks to Love Welcomes, they are receiving a more secure future.
When British Abi Hewitt visited a refugee (难民)camp near Athens, the experience deeply impacted her.
Hewitt, who had previously managed a life skills program for at-risk women called Thistle Farms, reached out to
her former boss, Becca Stevens on the Love Welcomes site. Stevens expressed interest in the idea of a creative
social enterprise to help these displaced women. Another colleague from Thistle Farms, Frannie Kieschnick,
quickly joined the team. The three co-founded Love Welcomes in 2017 with the women of the camp.
The initiative(首创)teaches female residents of the camp how to weave. They learn to transform recycled
material into beautiful one-of-a-kind handicrafts, including welcome mats, sofa cushions and key chains. The skills
the women learn in the program are just as important as the funds they earn from the sale of their handicrafts.
“When we sell products, the profit from that goes back to the women,” Hewitt explained. "We are now
employing 42 women by the end of this week. It makes a great difference to every single woman, to their family
and to everyone living in this camp. I am very proud of that. "
A program participant named Laure shared her story on the video, “I can say in the beginning when I entered
Greece, I was like, what can I do with my life?" Laure struggled to stay optimistic, explaining, "But when I heard
about Love Welcomes and started looming, all of these thoughts suddenly melted," she said. Learning the skill
helped Laure maintain a positive attitude. As the initiative has grown in popularity, it has attracted attention from

Although all Middle Eastern cultures cannot be grouped into one class, they do have similarities in their rules
for the appropriateness of eye culture. Eye contact is much less common and considered less appropriate in many of
these cultures than it is considered in the United States.
Middle Eastern cultures, largely Muslim, have strict rules regarding eye contact between the sexes; these rules
are connected to religious laws about appropriateness. Only a brief moment of eye contact would be permitted
between a man and a woman, if at all.
However, western women traveling in Muslim areas should not expect that no man will attempt to make eye
contact with them. As a matter of fact, their “differentness“ may draw attention to them, and men may try to make
eye contact with them. They should be aware, however, that returning eye contact will be considered the same as
saying, “Yes, I'm interested!" So when in the Middle East, care should be taken in making eye contact with anyone
of the opposite gender.
On the other hand, in many Middle Eastern cultures, intense eye contact between those of the same
gender—especially between men-can mean “I am telling you the truth! I am genuine in what I say!” Try to observe
the eye contact between those of the same gender to see if it is important to meet someone's long look when you
want to tell them, “Trust me! I'm sincere!”
As you can see, it is vital to know what eye contact communicates before you visit a new culture. Before you
travel, you would do well to go to your local public library or bookstore and check out or look through a book
about the culture of the country you plan to visit. Learn how to use eye contact and other body language wisely so
that you are regarded as polite, and so that you can better connect with people in a culture that is foreign to you!
28. What do most Middle Eastern countries have in common?
A. Dealing with each other properly. B. Keeping a long distance while talking.
C. Keeping looking into the eyes while talking. D. Making little eye contact between different genders.
29. Why will men in Muslim areas stare at western woman?
A. It is their own cultures. B. It is considered polite.
C. The western women are different. D. It is considered to be appropriate.
30. What does the underlined word "genuine” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. hopeful B. serious C. confident D. reasonable
31. What is the author's purpose of introducing the custom in the Middle East?
A. To support his conclusions. B. To show the importance of eye contact.
C. To give us some explanations. D. To teach us to communicate in Middle East.
D
Scientists have discovered an underwater coral tower near the Great Barrier Reef(大堡礁) that’s taller than
New York’s Empire State Building. It’s the tallest underwater structure discovered in over 120 years.
The researchers who discovered the reef were on a year-long trip aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s
research ship Falkor, where they were working to map the sea floor around Australia.
The scientists used a special underwater robot called SuBastian to help them explore and develop 3D maps. In
late October, as part of their exploration, the team came across the tower. It’s known as a “detached reef”, since its
structure isn’t attached to the Great Barrier Reef, but rises on its own from the sea floor.
At the bottom, the tower is nearly a mile wide. But from there, it becomes much more narrow, rising 1,640 feet
and stopping just 130 feet below the surface of the ocean. The lower is one o£ eight similar towers near Northern
Australia’s Cape York Peninsula. The other seven towers were discovered in the 1880’s.
“It’s a big reef not to have known about,” said Tom Bridge, “What it highlights is how little we know about
the ocean, even the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is bigger than many European countries and that
only a small part of it is made of the shallow water reefs it’s famous for.”
Overall, the Great Barrier Reef is struggling. Recent studies have shown that about half of its corals have died
in the last 25 years, in part because of rising ocean temperatures due to the climate crisis. Over the last year, the
Falkor’s scientific team has discovered 30 new kinds of sea creatures. In March, they discovered what they believe
is the longest sea creature ever recorded. The animal is called a “siphonophore” and it’s 150 feet long.
32. What did researchers do by Falkor around Australia?
A. Seek for coral lowers. B. Make a map of sea floor.
C. Research unknown species. D. Film the Great Barrier Reef.
33. What do we know about SuBastian?
A. It’s the most advanced underwater robot.
B. It contributes to the discovery of the tower.
C. It is suitable to detect building structures.
D. It reports important discoveries under water.
34. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The shape of the tower. B. The history of the tower.
C. The position of the tower. D. The information of the tower.
35. What can we infer from the text?
A. Europe used to ignore the Great Barrier Reef.
B. Climate crisis is ruining the Great Barrier Reef.
C. Tom Bridge has been researching the Great Barrier Reef.
D. More research should be done on the Great Barrier Reef.
