(2018·东北三省四市教研联合体高三模拟)“Her grades are fine; I’m not worried about that, but she just doesn’t seem to love learning any more,” Alice’s mum said.
She’s absolutely right. I’d noticed the same thing about her daughter over the previous two or three years when I’d been Alice’s middle school English, Latin, and writing teacher, and I have an answer, right there on the tip of my tongue, to what has gone wrong. Yet I’m torn between my responsibility to help Alice and the knowledge that what I have to say is a truth I’m not sure this mother is ready to hear.
The truth for this parent and so many others is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural curiosity and love of learning at the altar(圣坛) of achievement, and it’s our fault. Alice’s parents, her teachers, society at large—we are all supposed to be blamed in this crime against learning. From her first day of school, we pointed her toward that altar and trained her to measure her progress by means of points, scores, and awards. We taught Alice that her potential is tied to her intellect(智力), and that her intellect is more important than her character. We taught her to come home proudly bearing grade As, championship prizes, and college acceptance, and not on purpose, we taught her that we don’t really care how she obtains them. We taught her to protect her academic and extracurricular perfection at all costs and that it’s better to quit when things get challenging rather than risk losing that perfect record. Above all else, we taught her to fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning.

(2018·河北石家庄高三质检)Despite being used by 1.34 billion people each year, traveling on the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely.
One citizen, however,is trying to change this.“You get on the Tube and it’s completely silent and it’s weird,” says Jonathan Dunne, who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out badges(徽章)with the words “Tube chat?” last month, encouraging passengers in London to get talking to one another.“I handed out 500 badges during rush hour in a city of 8 million, expecting most of them to be thrown away, but after about 24 hours it completely snowballed,”he says.Dunne and his “Tube chat” campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the U.K.,as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances.
Although Dunne says he’s received mostly positive feedback, not everyone agrees with his idea.Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges with the words “Don’t even think about it” on them. Michael Robinson,24,a student from London, agrees.“Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work.It doesn’t need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you,” he says.

“People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I don’t,but it’s been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,” Dunne says.
So if you ever end up using public transport in the West, why not say hello to the person next to you?Just make sure to check for a badge first.

1.B 解析:选项B中的so就是指空前的“get a refill”这一行为;同时空后的“make a move fast...as well”与选项B的内容相呼应。
2.C 解析:空后的代词it指代空处前一句中的“I’m not in a good mood.Can I talk to you later if you don’t mind?”,所以空处及后一句与这一问题有关;同时后一句中的“Say it firmly”与选项C“不要为了获得同情而表现得太礼貌”在内容和语气方面是一致的。
