This is interesting to me because I've noticed the change in Chinese products over
time in Pakistan.
It's true that during the 1990s, Chinese products were thought of as something of
low quality (质量). They were bought by the poor and not expected to last long. I
remember they were cheap toys, clothes, etc.
Last month, I was in the market to buy some sheep. While talking with the sheep
keeper, I noticed something like a radio around his neck. I asked him what it was. He
showed it to me and I was surprised to see that it was a cool music player. There was
also a cell casing (电池外壳) on the back. I asked him where he got this and why. His
reply was:
“I get bored when I take my sheep out to the mountains for feeding. So I got this
from the local shop that sells Chinese products. I can keep it charged (充电) using the
sun only and have a few cheap cells to keep it going when needed. I can listen to the
radio, some songs on the player. This helps me pass the time when I have to feed my
sheep.”
But why this player? Why not some others?
“It's made in China and cheap enough for me to afford. Another reason is that I
couldn't find anything else that met my needs like this one.”
It's clear that “made in China” really doesn't mean what it used to.

Kaldi was tired but he couldn’t sleep. His goats (山羊) were awake and very
noisy. “Why can’t they sleep?” Kaldi thought. He couldn’t understand the problem so
he watched the animals carefully.
They were eating some green plants with little red fruits on them. Kaldi decided
to taste the fruits. He ate the soft part of each fruit and the hard (硬的) things in the
center. After a minute he began to feel different. He was not tired. He felt more awake

Those hard things were coffee beans (豆), and Kaldi discovered them in Ethiopia

coffee plants.
People learnt to make a drink from the beans, and they called it qahwa. For 400
years, only the Arabs knew about qahwa. Then people in Turkey learnt about it. Soon
after that, Western Europeans began to drink it, and in 1652 the first coffee shop

Dad answered in a short low voice, “Wood ... branches (树枝) ... leaves.”
“What’s that rock over there made of?”
“Rocks,” Dad answered quickly.
Harry wasn’t done yet. “How about the air? What is it made of?”

Harry said, “There are kinds of air?”
Dad sighed (叹息). He was trying to read the newspaper, but he knew his son

“Then how do we know they are there?”

Winters are cold in northern British Columbia, Canada. That’s one reason why
two girls worried about a number of homeless cats in their town.“My dad first saw this big cat problem ... and he knew a man who was troubled
by cats,” said Vivienne Thompson. Vivienne and her friend Catrina Vanderwolf learnt
that the man wasn’t happy about all the cats living around his home. They offered to
help.
Each day after school all winter long, the girls walked two miles to feed the cats.
“We could see all their footprints in the snow and at first couldn’t understand why
they wouldn’t let us get close to them,” explained the girls.
They contacted (联系) Valerie Ingram at the Lakes Animal Friendship Society.
She told them that the cats are “feral”. They belong to no one. Feral cats have little or
no contact with humans their whole lives. The large group of homeless cats probably
started with two stray (走失的) cats who gave birth to some baby cats. Those baby
cats grew up and had their babies, and before long, there were a number of homeless
cats.
To get this group of cats under control, the cats would need neuter operations (绝
育手术) so that they could no longer have babies. Vivienne and Catrina shared what
they learnt with their teachers and other students —and a project (项目)
began! Grassy Plains School started raising money to pay for the cats’ operations.
Before long, local organizations agreed to help. Volunteers spent months catching the
cats. Finally, they neutered all the cats and returned them to the group.
“We were so happy to be a part of helping, to get to know the cats, to see only
happy cats and a happy man who feeds them,” said Vivienne and Catrina.
