David walked down the street. All he wanted to do was to play basketball with Jim. But
his mother told him to return his sister’s books to the library on his way to Jim’s house.
In his eyes, books and summertime just don’t go together. He thought he had read a
lot during the school year. And he had never set foot inside a library. Today he’d just
drop the books off in the outside return box, but it was locked. He had to go inside to
return them.
David walked inside the building a few minutes before closing time. He put the books
into the return box. After a quick drink of water and a short stop in the toilet, he’d
be on his way to meet Jim. He walked out of the toilet. The library lights were turned off.
He was locked --- in a library.
David tried to use the telephone, but he couldn’t find one. As the sun began to set,
he searched for a light and found a little one on the desk. He used a pencil to write a
note on a big piece of paper. It read, “I’m locked inside. Please call for help.” He
put it on the front door. Surely, someone passing by would see it. He then turned his
attention to the library itself.
He was surprised to discover that this place was not so bad. Rows and rows of books!
When he saw a book about Michael Jordan on the desk, he picked it up. He opened the book
and began to read. He felt that being locked in the library didn’t seem to be such a terrible
thing.

A. he was very afraid of the dark B. he became interested in this place

As an English, I can speak three languages—English, German and French, so do you think
the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren’t.
Some statistics(数据)from the survey done by the European Commission(欧盟委员
会)showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign
language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people
in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more.
From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages
He wrote a note on a
big piece of paper.
He opened the book
and began to read. ?8
and that they are not good language learners in Europe.
And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language.
Many European people can have a conversation in English. That’s why my people don’t think
it is necessary to learn a foreign language.
In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning
a foreign language is only an option at school. In UK schools it is common for children
to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don’t
students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more
difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.
To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve
language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another
one is to give school children more choices.
Changing the British attitude(态度)to learning foreign language may be a hard task
but the government decided to try!
37. Which of the following about the British people is true?
A. They are good language learners.
B. 62% of them speak two or more languages.
C. They are famous for speaking foreign languages.
D. More than half of them only speak English.
38. In Paragraph 4, “an option” means ______.
A. a choice B. a game C. a mistake D. a conversation
39. What is the best title of the passage?9
A. Speaking English B. Foreign Language Learning in UK
C. Schools in UK D. Young English learners
D
Have you ever been in a conflict(冲突)? Do you know how to solve it? Conflict resolution
is a peaceful way of trying to solve a conflict. Both sides in the conflict explain what
they think happened to cause it. The person who listens to both sides is called the mediator(调
解人).
After both sides tell what they think happened to cause the conflict, they discuss ways
to solve it. They try to come up with a “resolution” that both sides agree to. They cannot
be angry during the communication. Everyone should use good listening and attending skills
while talking. If voices get too loud or it appears that someone is angry, the mediator
will speak up and have them treat each other with respect. After different suggestions are
offered in how to mediate the conflict, it is time for discussing the best solution(解决办法).
Here is an example of how conflict resolution works step by step in a school playground
setting:
● Someone says a student pushed him on the football field.
● The person who was accused as the “pusher” says it was actually an accident.
● The person who was pushed gets the mediator.
● The mediator takes the two persons to a quieter place, away from others to talk.
● The mediator calms them down and lets them know he understands their feelings.
● Each person describes what happened.
● The mediator repeats what he heard, so it is clear to everyone.10
● The mediator asks for ideas to solve the problem.
● The two persons offer their own solutions.
● The two persons have a discussion and come to an agreement.
● The mediator makes sure the persons follow the solution.
● The mediator offers praise for solving the problem.
Conflict resolution can be used in many environments. It encourages people to tell what
really happened, to understand each other better, and to work together peacefully to solve
the problem. It offers people workable steps to reach an agreement with the help of a mediator.
40. According to the passage, if two students have had a fight, they had better ______.
A. call the police B. get a mediator
C. ask parents for ideas D. describe the fight to teachers
41. In conflict resolution, the mediator’s job is to ______.
A. describe what really happened to both sides
B. help both sides reach an agreement in a proper way
C. listen to both sides and then punish the trouble maker
D. write down what both sides have explained in the communication
42. The underlined words “was accused” in this passage might mean “______ ” in Chinese.
A. 被惩罚 B. 被轻视 C. 被指责 D. 被否定
43. The writer gives the example in the passage in order to ______.
A. show how a mediator works in a football match
B. help us know the importance of a mediator in daily life
C. show how conflict resolution is used in different environments11
D. help us clearly understand the workable steps in conflict resolution

Dear Tom,
Now I’d like to tell you something about the Spring Festival. To the Chinese people
it is as important as Christmas to people in the West. It comes between late January and
early February.
Before Lunar New Year’s Day, people usually clean and decorate their houses. On New
Year’s Eve people get together and have a big dinner with families. Dumplings are the most
traditional food in the north. After that, people always watch TV programs and play fireworks
outside. Spring Festival lasts fifteen days. During the fifteen days, people visit their
relatives and friends from door to door. It is our custom that children get lucky money
from elders.
Welcome to spend the Spring Festival with us.16

are crazy about something easily. If you are a blue person, you may be good at solving

to be alone. If you are a yellow person, you will care more about the result. You always
want to be more successful. So, of course, sometimes you will care little about other
people's feeling. Now, let's turn to the green people, they are friendly and easy to make
friends with. But they are not willing to change. What is your color?
