One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In
order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be
a good friend at school?
Listen to your friends carefully when you are talking. Don’t say anything unless they
ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say, they
just need someone to talk to about their feelings.
If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try
to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take
an extra pencil or pen with you to classes when they forget one. Have a little extra money
in your pocket in case they forget something they need.
Be there for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Marilyn Monroe,
a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control,
but if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve* to be with me
at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when
they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a
good time!
____▲_____. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on.
Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning
things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when
you’re all old!
44. How many tips are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.8
45. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should_____▲_____.
A. just listen unless asked B. share your feelings as well
C. calm him or her down D. give him or her some advice
46. What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words?
A. Life without a friend is death. B. A friend is easier lost than found.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. A man is known by his friends.
47. Which of the following can be put in the blank “___▲_____” of the last paragraph?
A. Enjoy yourselves B. Talk with your friends
C. Understand your friends D. Make plans with your friends
C
Getting rid of dirt*, in the opinion of most people, is a good
thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to
dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin
was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot
water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in
public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did
the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe
lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. One day
the king learned that a nobleman had taken a bath, he ordered that, to avoid the attack
of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief* in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded
as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt
is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing
disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World
War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths 9
ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try
to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of
disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist*, encourages children to
play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter* position is gaining
some ground.
48. Why did the king of England in the 16th century close bath houses?
A. Because the bath houses were too dirty to stay in.
B. Because he didn’t like to take a bath in bath houses.
C. Because he was sure bathing would cause skin disease.
D. Because he believed disease could be spread in public baths.
49. Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing? ______▲______
A. Interested. B. Afraid. C. Excited. D. Bored.
50. What does the underlined word “merit ” in the passage probably mean?
A. grade B. attention C. advantages D. disadvantages
51. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. The Danger of Dirt B. The Attitude to Bathing
C. The King of England D. The Change of Views on Dirt
D
When I was young, I went looking for gold in California.
By the time I reached the Stanislau in California, all the
people were gone because there wasn’t any more gold. But I realized
I was not alone. A man was smiling at me in front of his house one day.
In this little house, I saw that a woman had made it into a home.
The man smiled, “it is all her work, but she is away for two weeks now.” He sighed*, “She
went to visit her parents. She will be back on Saturday.” The man told me his name was
Henry. I visited him sometimes after that.
On Thursday evening, Henry had a visitor, a grey-haired miner* named Tom. He came for
news from Henry’s wife. Henry took a yellowed letter out and read it to us. It was full 10
of loving messages to him and their friends. When the man finished reading it, old Tom cried
for the message in the letter. The next day, another old miner, Joe, came to visit. He asked
to hear the letter. It made him cry, too. “We really miss her.” He said.
Saturday finally came. Tom and Joe came with a bottle of whiskey. They kept giving Henry
whiskey until he was sound asleep.
“Is his wife c oming today?” I asked.
“His wife has been dead for nineteen years,” Tom said.
“Dead? ”I whispered.
“On her way back from her parents, on a Saturday evening in June, the Indians captured*
her. No one ever saw her again. Henry lost his mind. When June comes, he thinks she has
gone on her trip to see her parents. Then he begins to wait for her. We come around to visit,
so he can read the letter to us.”
“On the Saturday night which she should come home, we come here to be with him. We
put sleeping drug in his drink so he will sleep through the night. Then he is all right
for another year.”
“We have done this every June for nineteen years,” he said sadly. “Henry was nice
in the mine. The first year there were twenty-seven of us staying with him. Now just the
two of us are left.” He opened the door of the pretty little house. And the two old men
disappeared into the darkness of the Stanislau.
52. Henry’s house might be_____▲______.
A. old and dirty B. new and clean C. old but lovely D. new but
small
53. Where was Henry’s wife when he was with the writer?
A. She was looking for gold. B. She was tidying up the room.
