I've been a volunteer in the Macmillan@ Glasgow Libraries programme for just
over a year.I got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I
retired from work.I thought being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support
Volunteer might be a good way to do that by using some of the skills I learned at work.
At one time , I felt I made a real difference when a lady came in to use the
service. She was very upset , but she was not the person with cancer. It was her
partner. She had lots of things on her mind. We,together with a counselor, had a chat
about her to help deal with all the emotions(情感) she felt.We knew we could arrange
something , so we discussed with her what could be done for her family. She was
relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we
managed to get the ball rolling during her visit.
The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is
nonclinical and therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor's surgery. The team
in the library are not medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical
terms very often.
It's great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other
to get a resolution(解决) for people who come in.It's good to have to team at the other
end of the phone whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help
as a volunteer.

Tourism is often about seeking deeper emotional and personal connections with the
world around us.Not all travel experiences, however, need to take place in the real
world. With the evolution of virtual reality(VR) technology, tourism will increasingly
become a combination of physical and virtual world. VR may even remove the need to
travel entirely.
But can a VR experience really equal a real world ? Many experts believe it
can.Studies have shown that our brains have an inbuilt VRlike mechanism that enables
us to live imagined experiences.Much of our waking life is spent thinking about either
the past or the future. This is known as“mind wandering”.During these events we're not
paying attention to the current world around us.Instead,we're recalling memories,or
creating and processing imagined futures.
When engaged in mind wandering, our brains process these mental images using
the same pathways used to receive inputs from the real world. So,the imagined past or
future can create emotions and feelings similar to how we react to everyday life.VR can
create these same feelings.
While critics might argue that a virtual experience will never match reality, there
are several ways VR tourism could make a positive contribution.Firstly it could help
protect sensitive locations from overtourism. In recent years famous sites such as Maya
Bay in Thailand , have had to limit the number of visitors because of their negative
impact. These places are now producing their own VR experiences that will allow
tourists to pass through virtual models of the sites.
Virtual reality may also allow people back in time,to experience historical events,
visit ancient cities, and even to walk among dinosaurs.
Finally,in a world where many people suffer from stress and depression due to
overwork, virtual tourism may provide a cheap and convenient way for people to take
brief holidays to otherwise unreachable destinations and recharge their batteries ,
without ever leaving their homes.
It sounds like science fiction but it's already happening( 流 行 的 ) . As virtual
technology improves and as people continue to demand new and interesting experiences,
more virtual tourism will be expected , both in combination with the real world and instead of it.

Recently I read Nineteen Eighty Four , a novel set in a state where even the
language people use is controlled.Adjectives are forbidden and instead they use
expressions such as“ungood” ,“ plus good ” and “ double plus good ” to express
emotions. As I first read this I thought how impossible it would be in our society to have
such vocabulary. However , the more I thought about it , the more I realized it is
happening.I type messages to my friends and alongside each are the emoticons(情感符
号).I often use them to emphasize something because these specific emoticons convey
my emotions much better than using just words. And I wonder, with our daily use of
emoticons, whether we are losing the beauty and diversity of our vocabulary.
English has the largest vocabulary in the world, but who's to say what it'll be like
in the future ? Perhaps we'll have a shorter language , full of saying“cry faces”if
something sad happens or using abbreviations like LOL(laugh out loud)or BRB(be right
back)instead of saying the full phrase. So does this mean our vocabulary will shrink? Is
it the start of an exciting new era( 时 代 ) ? Or is this a classic case of the older
generations saying ,“ Things weren't like that when I was younger. We didn't use
emoticons to show our emotions”?
Yet when you look back over time, the power of image has always been there.Even
in the prehistoric era they used images to communicate , and what's even more
incredible is that we're able to analyze those drawings and understand the meaning of
them thousands of years later.Pictures have the ability to go beyond the limits of time
and language.Images, like cave paintings and emoticons, allow us to convey a message
that is rather universal.
