How to Avoid the Coronavirus? Wash Your Hands.
As a New York Times correspondent in China, I 1 the SARS outbreak in 2002 and 2003
during which a 2 coronavirus was first detected in Guangdong. My two children attended
3 school in Beijing throughout the outbreak.
The International School of Beijing, where my children were 4 , was one of the few in
the capital that stayed 5 throughout the SARS outbreak.
The school 6 a bunch of simple precautionary 7 : a stern note to parents 8
them not to send a child to 9 who was sick and warning them that students would be 10
for fevers with ear thermometers(耳温枪)at the school door. There was no 11 of food at
lunch. The teacher led the kids in 12 hand washing throughout the day at classroom
13 , while singing a prolonged “hand washing song” to 14 they did more than a cursory (马
虎) pass under the tap with water only.
With those precautions 15 , I observed something of a public 16 miracle: Not
only did no child get SARS, but it seemed no student was sick with anything at all for 17
on end.
The World Health Organization 18 the SARS outbreak contained in July 2003. But, oh,
those 19 persisted. The best first-line defenses against SARS or the novel coronavirus or
most any virus at all are the ones that Grandma and 20 taught us, after all.

As is known to all, most stories of kindness do not begin with formerly drug-addicted
celebrity (名人) bad boys. 1 does. When this 2 took place, I was accompanying my grandmother at a huge garden
party. 3 , Robert Downey Jr., in a nice cream-colored suit, came in. I pointed out this big
movie star to Grandma 4 , but she was far more interested in piling her paper plate with
cheese.
As my 80-year-old grandmother rose for the 5 after the party, she fell into a wheelchair
ramp nearby. The sharp ramp 6 her leg open and it was bleeding.
I should have quickly taken control of the 7 — but due to my blood faint, I didn’t.
Luckily, Robert Downey Jr. 8 .
He called an ambulance immediately, and asked someone to 9 a blanket. He took off his
suit and 10 his suit around her leg. The cream color turned dark red. Robert surely knew how to
speak to her, 11 , distract her. He stayed with my grandmother until the ambulance
came, 12 her hand and telling her she was breaking his 13 by leaving so early. I hurried into
the ambulance without a word, feeling too shy to thank him.
Some 15 years after that garden party, and five years since he’d been set free from prison for
possession of drugs in his car, I came across Robert in a fancy restaurant. I was 14 to respect
people’s privacy and never 15 someone having a meal. But on this day, I decided to 16 the
code.
“I don’t have any 17 if you remember this...” and I told him the story. “I just wanted to tell
you that it was simply the kindest act I’ve ever 18 .”
It’s never too 19 to express our appreciation for kindness which lies in everyone, even a
celebrity bad boy. 20 , appreciation itself is a sort of kindness.

As we all know “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” and “ 1 every successful
man there is a woman.” Both these 2 mean the same things. Men rule the 3 , but their
wives rule them.
Chinese people and other foreigners often say, 4 of the American women like making
their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want 5 for themselves. They want
good 6 . When they work they want to 7 better paid. They want to be as 8 as men.
In the 1960s, the American women’s liberation 9 was started by women who don’t
want to 10 behind successful men. They want to stand beside them, with the same 11
for success. They don’t want to be told that certain jobs or 12 are closed to them. They refused
to work side by side with men who do the 13 work for higher pay.
In America, a liberation woman must be 14 of being a woman and have confidence in
herself. If somebody says to her, “You have come a long 15 , baby”, she will 16 and
answer, “Not nearly as 17 as I am going to go, baby.”
On the other hand, this movement is quite 18 and many American women do not agree.
19 it has already made some important 20 in women’s lives.

From my early career as a doctor and now as an author and leadership expert, I help people
learn about the power and happiness that come with the correct mindset (心态). To teach this
mindset, I first teach people the effect of making excuses, which will 1 them to believe the
external ( 外 部 的 ) false 2 and keep them from stepping into the power they have
to 3 happiness and success.
Take me and my 4 to lose weight for example. When I was 25, I weighed 150 pounds.
To make the 5 of my weight become smaller, I seemingly did whatever I could in a few

腺) problem. Later I went to my doctor, and she 7 a series of tests carefully. Then she shared
with me the 8 news that my thyroid was perfectly 9 . While she was excited, I was a
bit 10 . You see, I’d told myself that I had done 11 I could to lose weight. But only when
my doctor helped me accurately 12 my habits did I realize that I was only making a
half-hearted 13 . I was dieting from morning until afternoon, however, after 3 pm, I 14 myself

contributed it to a medical 16 .
A lot of us live our lives in the same way. We 17 see external inexact reasons and
believe our half-hearted efforts were real. We should 18 making excuses and change our
mindset to live actively in reality. Now I have 19 my mistake and I look slim. You should
also 20 to turn your excuses into good results.
