Humans and many other mammals have unusually efficient internal temperature regulating systems that automatically maintain stable core body temperatures in cold winters and warm summers. In addition, people have developed cultural patterns and technologies that help them adjust to extremes of temperature and humidity (湿度).
In very cold climates, there is a constant danger of developing hypothermia, which is a life-threatening drop in core body temperature to below normal levels. The normal temperature for humans is about 37.0°C. However, differences in persons and even the time of day can cause it to be as much as 6°C higher or lower in healthy individuals. It is also normal for core body temperature to be lower in elderly people. Hypothermia begins to occur when the core body temperature drops to 34.4°C. Below 29.4°C, the body cools more rapidly
because its natural temperature regulating system usually fails. The rapid decline in core body temperature is likely to result in death. However, there have been rare cases in which people have been saved after their temperatures had dropped to 13.9-15.6°C. This happened in 1999 to a Swedish woman who was trapped under an ice sheet in freezing water for 80 minutes. She was found unconscious, not breathing, and her heart had stopped beating, yet she was eventually saved despite the fact that her temperature had dropped to 13.7°C.
In extremely hot climates or as a result of uncontrollable infections, core body temperatures can rise to equally dangerous levels. This is hyperthermia. Life-threatening hyperthermia typically starts in humans when their temperatures rise to 40.6-41.7°C. Only a few days at this extraordinarily high temperature level is likely to result in the worsening of internal organs and death.
24. What keeps our body temperature stable?
A. Culture and technologies. B. The stable earth temperature.
C. Our strong determination. D. Some kind of in-body system.
25. What is a Swedish woman mentioned for in the text?
A. Proving the strength of life.
B. Arguing against some conclusion.
C. Showing the limit on humans’ body temperature.
D. Introducing an exceptional case about our body temperature.
26. Which of the following may cause hyperthermia?
A. Extreme climates. B. Very cold climates.
C. Controllable infections. D. Temperatures below 29.4°C.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Humans’ Temperature Regulating System B. Changes of Body Temperatures
C. Humans’ Temperature D. An Ice Trap Survivor
C
Fans of the movie Finding Nemo may remember the terrifying fish that scares Dory and Marlin at the bottom of a trench.
But in reality this “monster”, a black seadevil, is only about 9 cm long, which would make it about a third of the size of Dory and potentially smaller than Marlin or Nemo.
While this inaccuracy may seem harmless, it could cause problems for future conservation efforts, as people are more likely to support conservation of adorable rather than scary-looking animals.
The black seadevil is just one of the mysterious “monsters”. From 2000 to 2010, scientists described about 1,200 new species in the Census of Marine Life. While this figure may seem astonishing, a further 5,000 individual dead creatures are in specimen(标本) jars, waiting to be described.
Specimens must be methodically collected, identified, and then the identity of new deep water species must be confirmed.
If we call unusual deep-sea animals monsters, then we may harm their conservation as people are unlikely to be connected with them or care about saving them.
On the other hand, their rarity clearly makes them popular on social media sites. For other species, this has already resulted in increases in illegal trading for unusual pets. Deep-sea species may potentially become illegally obtained specimens or food. Humans may end up eating these animals of the deep sea to extinction before their species are even known to science.
Every habitat on earth is interconnected, and whatever we as humans do has an influence on marine ecosystems. In reality, about 80% of our oxygen is produced by microorganisms(微生物) in the oceans. This makes our oceans both the lungs and lifeblood of our planet and we must all try harder to save them.
28. What can we know about the black seadevil in reality?
A. People benefit greatly from the oxygen produced by it.
B. Its body size is a big threat to fish like Dory and Nemo.
C. Its scary appearance will cause problems for conservation.
D. People didn't know much about it when filming Finding Nemo.
29. What does the writer think of the progress of describing new species?
A. Acceptable. B. Surprising. C. Unsatisfying. D. Hopeless.
30. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 7 probably refer to?
A. Their popularity on social media sites.
B. Their rarity among sea creatures.
C. Their conservation being harmed.
D. Their importance being ignored.
31. What can we infer about those unusual sea animals?
A. They are the lungs and lifeblood of our planet.
B. Confirming their identity is very urgent for protection.
C. Most of them are becoming illegally obtained specimens.
D. Adorable ones are more likely to be posted on social media sites.
D
Stan Lee, cofounder of the Marvel Universe(漫威宇宙) and co-creator of many of its most popular superheroes, died at the age of 95.
Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York in 1922. As a son of workingclass Jewish immigrants from Romania, times were hard and he lived with his family in a shabby singlebedroom apartment. After graduating from high school at 16, Lieber landed a job as an assistant at Timely Comics. By the early 1940s, he was a temporary editor for the company. It was at this time that he began using his pen name—Stan Lee. In 1947, two years after returning from serving for the U.S. Army, Lee married his wife, Joan. The two began their 70year marriage and had two children.
In the late 1950s, DC Comics breathed new life into its classic superhero and experienced a significant
success with its updated version of the Flash, and later with super-team the Justice League of America.
To compete against DC Comics, Lee was given the task of creating their own group of superheroes. In 1961, Timely Comics changed its name into Marvel Comics after Atlas Comics, and that November saw the debut(首次亮相) of the Fantastic Four. Lee’s later famous and lasting creations of comicbook superheroes included SpiderMan, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and the XMen.
Over the course of his career, Lee was an icon of Marvel Comics. As a writer and editor and, at various points, both the publisher and vice president of Marvel Comics, Lee not only introduced interesting characters to the industry, but changed the way that comic books came together. He also created a cooperative workflow between writers and artists, which became known as the “Marvel Method”. Lee received a National Medal of Arts in 2008 for his innovations that revolutionized American comic books.
32. What do we know about Lee from paragraph 2?
A. He served for the U.S. Army for two years.
B. He suffered from an unfortunate marriage.
C. He had a tough and struggling childhood.
D. He adopted his pen name at the age of 16.
33. What was the company called when SpiderMan was created?
A. Timely Comics. B. Marvel Comics.
C. Atlas Comics. D. DC Comics.
34. What does the underlined word“icon” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Statue. B. Agent.
C. Assistant. D. Symbol.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Stan Lee, the Godfather of Marvel Comics B. The Development of Marvel Comics
C. Stan Lee, a Superhero in Comic Books D. The Popular Superheroes of Marvel Comics

Think positive
How are you feeling today? If your head’s in a spin because you’ve had a bad night’s sleep, or maybe you’ve just got too much to do, the chances are you’re not in the best of moods. If everything seems like an effort and you have a negative attitude, the last thing you want to be told is to be positive! 36
Of course, developing a positive attitude is easier said than done. 37 When you’re feeling down, it is hard to be optimistic. But a study in the US has found that people who are optimists are more likely to live longer than those who have a more negative approach to life. So, maybe the thought of a longer life might encourage you to have a more hopeful outlook on life.
38 Professor Lewina Lee from Boston University School of Medicine, who worked on the
study, told the BBC that: “Our findings speak to the possibility that raising levels of optimism may promote longevity and healthy ageing.” And she advises that pessimists could benefit from doing things like imagining a future where everything turns out well.
39 Vicki Siska says “Music feeds my soul. A sense of humor keeps things in perspective.” And Pippa Kennedy says “being grateful for what you have — and lots of chocolate — helps!” 40 That’s probably why other people have recommended doing yoga as well as staying fit and healthy to help maintain a positive outlook on life.
A. It doesn’t come naturally to everyone.
B. As we know, every coin has two sides.
C. But being positive could have more benefits than you think.
D. Pessimists tend to give up when facing difficulties.
E. The saying goes that a healthy body leads a healthy mind.
F. People have been giving their personal advice on keeping a positive approach to life.
G . The study concluded that optimists may find it easier to control emotions and get less stressed.

It was a rainy November morning. Overcome with anger I knew if I didn’t leave the house soon I would lose my temper with my husband, Joe. As rain came down in sheets, Joe offered to take me to work. I struggled into my jacket, seized my bag and teaching plans and ignored him.
He insisted and reached for his boots. I looked at the piles of newspapers and the dirty dishes still on the table. “Don’t you have enough to do? I can take care of myself” I stormed out, not even kissing him good-bye. Joe shouted after me not to take the shortcut (捷径).
Joe and I had been eagerly looking forward to our retirement when a heart attack that past spring forced him to leave his job earlier than we had planned. As the medical bills mounted we realized I would have to continue working full-time while Joe stayed home and took over the housework.
The new arrangement was a disaster. Exhausted after a day of full work, all I wanted was a hot home cooked meal and a good night’s sleep. However, what greeted me at the table was a microwave package. Sometimes he would serve oatmeal (燕麦)for several nights in a row. One night when I dragged myself to bed, I was terrified to discover Joe had turned our white sheets blue. He told me he had found out how to save on water, soap and electricity. He patted his blue trousers and announced proudly washing everything together was just the secret.
Ten minutes later, ignoring Joes warning I turned off the main route. I thought it hadn’t rained enough to flood the road, but as I rounded the corner water rushed across my path. After a few feet, the car got stuck. I opened the door and water poured in. I hurriedly closed the door. I couldn’t risk walking in this. Almost 20 minutes passed. The car began to shake. I got frightened to death when I heard three long honks (喇叭声).

读后续写(满分25分)
Looking over my shoulder, I stared into the flashing lights of a truck. It was Joe! I couldn’t help bursting into tears. Joe shouted to me not to be frightened. Then he threw a thick rope so that I could hang on to it and walk straight toward him. I opened the door, grabbed it and inched out. However, a sudden fall left me in the rushing water. I struggled to my feet, only to find a branch blocking the way right in front of me.
I screamed that I couldn’t make it. Joe, however, remained calm! He urged me to take one step at a time and assured me I could make it. I moved forward slowly and cautiously before I fell into his arms. Sobbing against his chest, I apologized that I shouldn’t have taken the shortcut. Joe patted me saying his primary concern was my safety. Only then did I realize Joe actually understood how to take care of me despite his trouble with the housework.

M: It’s hard to say exactly. I share an unlimited call, text, and Internet plan with my family, but the taxes and extra fees are slightly different every month. (2) But it’s about $50, give or take a couple dollars.
Text 3
M: Where did you find that hat? I’ve been looking for one just like it.
W: I bought it online. It’s perfect for the summer months because of its wide shape. I used to wear baseball hats until I realize they don’t protect your entire face from the sun. (3)
Text 4
M: You’re looking a little stressed.
W: I have a million things to do, and all of them have to be finished within three hours. (4)
Text 5
M: Can you pass the salt, please? This soup is good, but it is a little plain. (5)
W: I put so much salt in here when I was making it! Maybe it got watered down. Here, try putting in some pepper instead and tell me what you think.
Text 6
W: Can I get these shoes, please?
M: Are you joking? Those shoes are six hundred dollars!
W: But all the cool girls at school have them! (6)
M: Well, the answer is no. And you’d never be able to walk in shoes like that. Those heels must be around five inches tall.
W: High heels are super “in” right now. (6) Uncle Tim bought some for Samantha! I’ll do extra chores! Please? (7)
M: No way. Do you know how many chores you’d have to do to afford those? (7) Look at these over here. They’re sixty dollars and have a low heel, so you can walk in them without getting uncomfortable.
Text 7
W: What are you reading?
M: It’s a new children’s book called Sail Away by Langston Hughes.
W: Isn’t he a poet?
M: Yes. The book is a collection of his poems about the ocean. The artist Ashley Bryan created a bunch of pictures made out of paper to go with the poems, (8) and he’s ninety-two years old!
W: Wow! How old is Langston Hughes? (9)
M: He’s not alive anymore. He died in 1967 when he was only sixty-five. (9) Ashley Bryan has done a lot of performances of Langston Hughes’s poems, and he wanted to provide artwork for a book of them. When he started out in 1962, he was the first African American to publish a children’s book as an author and artist. He was forty years old. Now, he’s won many awards and has more than twenty books out.

W: Hi, Mr. Smith.
M: Hi, Debra. I just dropped by to see how you’re getting along with your packing. Need any help? (10)
W: No, everything’s OK. Thanks. But I’ve got a lot more things to take home than I’d thought. It’ll probably be a little overweight.
M: You know that as long as the two cases are less than 40 kg, that’s all right for flights to America. (11) You can have a handbag and a small backpack as carry-ons, too.
W: Then that won’t be a problem.
M: Now, when did you say your flight leaves? (12)
W: Let me see...at 10:30 a.m. (12)
M: I’ll come by and pick you up at 8:30 a.m. Then we can arrive early enough to check in without rushing.
W: Thanks, Mr. Smith. You don’t have to bother, though. I can call a taxi.
M: Look, I don’t have anything scheduled for tomorrow morning, so it won’t be any trouble picking you up.
W: Good old Mr. Smith: always so helpful!
Text 9
M: Bonnie, I’m super nervous right now.
W: Why, what’s up? I thought you were flying down to L.A. today. Are you afraid of flying or something?
M: No, I fly all the time. It’s just that I’m doing my biggest interview of my entire career tomorrow, (13) (15) and I don’t want to mess it up.
W: Come on, you’ve been at the magazine for more than a year. Your editor wouldn’t send you down there unless he had confidence in your abilities. Who is the interview with? (13)
M: Quentin Tarantino.
W: Uh…what? Quentin Tarantino? The director? Are you serious?
M: Yeah!
W: Oh, my God! I can’t believe this! Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie of all time, (14) and Kill Bill might be number two. And even my parents liked Jackie Brown. He’s, like, A-list famous! He might be the best director of the last twenty years.
M: Do you see now why I’m nervous?
W: Yes, I’d be scared out of my mind if I were you. But this will be good for your career. Hey, there is something that I still don’t understand.
M: What? (16)
W: Why on earth did Quentin Tarantino agree to do an interview for your magazine, Trevor?
M: What’s that supposed to mean? (16)
W: Um…never mind. (16) Good luck down there! Get a good night’s sleep tonight because Saturday will be the biggest day of your life! (15)
