The Price of Success
One problem for schools is that many students do not want to study hard. As a result, they perform (表现) poorly
in their classes. This is especially true in the United States, where average scores for math and science are lower than
in many other countries. In recent years, schools and charities have been looking for ways to help students get better
grades in these subjects. An organization called the LMD Foundation introduced a program called Learn and Earn
recently.
In the program, money was used to get a group of students to study harder in math and science. In addition to the
normal school day, they went to extracurricular classes for four hours each week. The students were paid eight
dollars for each hour of the class. By the end of the year, the students in the program had higher grades than a similar
group of students who had not taken part.
Not everyone thinks that this is a good idea, though. TV reporter John Tulenko studied data (数据) from a
similar program. He found that students' grades went back down when they stopped getting paid. Many people are
worried about this. They think that the students study because they want money, not because they enjoy learning.
Also, some people believe that these types of programs are a bad idea because it is a large part of a teacher's job to get
students to study. If students are given money, some teachers might stop trying to do this.
However, others believe that these learning programs can be helpful for students from poor families. Many of
these students do part-time jobs after school, and some even quit school at a young age to work. Some do this to help
get money for their families. Others feel that they can learn more by working than by going to school. Programs like
Learn and Earn let these students stay in school and still make money.
24. What is true about many students in the United States?
A. They are not allowed to receive help from organizations.
B. They study more than students in other countries.
C. They are doing poorly in math and science.
D. They do not help their classmates get better grades.
25. Students in the Learn and Earn program ________.
A. were asked to help other students with poor grades B. were given money if their grades went up
C. were made to go to school during summer vacation D. were paid to go to extra classes after school
26. Why do some people think that programs like Learn and Earn are a bad idea?
A. Students' grades only improve a little during the program.
B. Students stop studying when they are in the program.
C. Teachers might stop trying to do a big part of their job.
D. Teachers have started giving low grades to save money
27. What does the underlined word “extracurricular” in the second paragraph mean?
A. after-school B. normal C. informal D. moral
C 25. D 26. C 27. A

large part of a teacher's job to get students to study. If students are given money, some teachers might stop trying to do
this.

If plastic had been invented when the Pilgrims sailed from Plymouth, England, to North America - and their
Mayflower had been stocked with bottled water and plastic-wrapped snacks, their plastic waste would likely still be
around four centuries later. Atlantic waves and sunlight would have worn all that plastic into tiny bits. And those bits
might still be floating around the world’s oceans today, waiting to be eaten by some fish or oyster, and finally perhaps
by one of us.
Because plastic wasn’t invented until the late 19th century, and its production only really took off around 1950,
we have a mere 9. 2 billion tons of the stuff to deal with. Of that, more than 6. 9 billion tons have become waste. And
of that waste, a surprising 6. 3 billion tons never made it to a recycling bin - the figure that shocked the scientists who
published the numbers in 2017.
No one knows how much unrecycled plastic waste ends up in the ocean, the earth’s last sink. In 2015, Jenna
Jambeck, a University of Georgia engineering professor, caught everyone’s attention with a rough estimate: between
5. 3 million and 14 million tons of plastic waste each year just come from coastal regions.
Meanwhile, ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine( 海 洋 的 )animals every year. Nearly 700
species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. Some are harmed visibly, stuck by
abandoned things made of plastic. Many more are probably harmed invisibly. Marine species of all sizes, from
zooplankton to whales, now eat microplastics, the bits smaller than one-fifth of an inch across.
“This isn’t a problem where we don’t know what the solution is,” says Ted Siegler, a Vermont resource
economist who has spent more than 25 years working with developing nations on garbage. “We know how to pick up
garbage. Anyone can do it. We know how to deal with it. We know how to recycle.” It’s a matter of building the
necessary institutions and systems, he says, ideally before the ocean turns into a thin soup of plastic.
28. Why does the author mention the Pilgrims in paragraph 1?
A. To prove plastic was difficult to invent.
的
B. To introduce what marine animals like eating.
C. To tell the Pilgrims contributed a lot to the marine protection.
D. To show plastic waste has a lasting effect on the ocean.
29. What’s the main trouble marine animals face according to the text?
A. Lacking protection. B. Being stuck by plastics.
C. Being caught by humans. D. Treating plastics as food.
30. What does Ted Siegler want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Some people don’t know the solution of plastics waste.
B. Plastics will turn the ocean into a soup of plastic.
C. It’s time to take measures to deal with plastic waste.
D. People should avoid using plastics to protect the ocean.
31. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A biology textbook. B. A travel brochure.
C. An environmental report. D. A lifestyle magazine.
D 29. D 30. C 31. C

Marine species of all sizes, from zooplankton to whales, now eat microplastics, the
bits smaller than one-fifth of an inch across.

If Confucius (孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there
would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will
give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own
national heroes.
But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that
foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities.
More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools
teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history
and philosophy (哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese
wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States,at the same time, are
racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States.
Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese
customers.
So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and
Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.
32. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________.
A. provide some key facts about Confucius
B. attract the readers' interest in the subject
C. show great respect for the ancient thinker
D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations
33. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students ________.
A. have a great interest in studying Chinese
B. take an active part in Chinese competitions
C. try to get high scores in Chinese exams
D. fight for a chance to learn Chinese
34. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Forgotten Wisdom in America
B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language
C. Chinese Culture for Westerners
D. Old Thinker with a Big Future
35. The passage is likely to appear in ________.
A. a biography B. a history paper
C. a newspaper D. a philosophy textbook
B 33. A 34. D 35. C
推理判断题,由第一段“If Confucius (孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday
推理判断题,由第四段“Students in the United States,at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese.”
So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and
well.Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce
Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten
by people in the West, even if his birthday is.”

People need homes: children assume their parents' place as home; boarders call school “home”on weekdays;
married couples work together to build new homes; and travelers ... have no place to call “home”,at least for a few
nights.
___36___?Don't they have the right to a home? Of course they do.
Some regular travelers take their own belongings: like bed sheets, pillowcases and family photos to make them
feel like home no matter where they are; some stay for long periods in the same hotel and as a result become very
familiar with service and attendants; others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make things more
homely.___37___!
And how about maintaining relationships while in transit? ___38___;some send letters and postcards, or even
photos; others may just call and say hi, just to let their friends know that they're still alive and well.___39___. Making
friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home. Backpackers in youth hostels may become very good
friends, even closer than siblings.
Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging?
___40___.Wherever we are, with just a little bit of effort and imagination, we can make the place we stay “home”.
A. Home is the harbor for travelers
B. People find ways to keep in touch
C. Do all people have a comfortable home
D. Some keep contact with their friends via Internet
E. So how about people who have to travel for extended periods of time
F. Whenever we step out of our local boundaries, there is always another “home”waiting to be found

A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never
did care for pie.
—Tenneva Jordan
I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, the oldest and my mom's
"grown up" girl, I had to keep my cool. I was in middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I
checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I had
examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.
It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered(撒) presents,
she would sigh and warn us, "There won't be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed." Christmas
had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In years past, the presents would pile up and spill out from
under the tree, taking over the living room. I had heard the phrase "giving is better than receiving," but thought that
whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason I
couldn't get to sleep on Christmas Eve.
On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into
the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family
members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.
"Here's another one for you,” said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so
much time examining the presents before Christmas, I recognized this one. But it had not been mine. It was my mom's.
A new label had been put on it, with my name written in my mother's handwriting.
"Mom, I can't...”
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:
I was stopped by my mother's eager, joyful look.

______________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
I have always remembered that Christmas fondly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
I was stopped by my mother's eager, joyful look. "Let's see what it is, honey. Hurry and open it." It was a blow
dryer. Though this may seem but a simple gift, to me it was so much more. Being an eleven-year-old girl, I was
stunned. In my world, where receiving largely outweighed giving, my mom's act of selflessness was
incomprehensible. It was a huge act. Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must
love me to give up her Christmas so I could have a few more presents.
Paragraph 2:
I have always remembered that Christmas fondly. It had such an impact on me. As an adult with children in my
life whom I adore, I can now understand my mom's actions. I see, actually, she was not "giving up her Christmas" as
I had thought, but was finding an even greater joy in her Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. My
mom's simple act meant the world to me. Whenever I look back on my mom's giving, I will choose to give in my life.
