An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly
educated son. Suddenly a crow(乌鸦)perched(栖息)on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said,
“Father, I have just now told you, it’s a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this?”
At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒)was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father
with a rebuff(生硬回绝). “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the
fourth time, “What is this?”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and
again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”
A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的)diary, which he
had maintained since his son was born.
On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.
When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the
window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I
hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather
felt affection for my innocent son.

A vacation with my mother
I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my
mother-loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when
I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to
spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day
of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of
our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived,
and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely
drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse
and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving
while Dad slept:” You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I’ll stand outside the
door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “ Honey, where are the
kids?” “ What?! Oh, Gosh… I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually
left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in
vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a
likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To
our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a
strange family showed upon her front doorsteps, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks
everyone in the world as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

读后续写 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。 My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to
support the family.
There was one day during elementary school when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.
How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of
my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!”
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted (面对) her that day and said, “If
you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?”
My mom did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full
of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.
I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go
abroad for further education.
Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and
the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her
grandchildren.
When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I
screamed at her, “How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!”
And to this, my mother quietly answered, “Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address.” and she was
soon out of sight.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion (同学聚会) came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going
on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.
My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed (流出 ) a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted
me to have.

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful town and a couple of lovers would often stay on the top of the
mountain, enjoying the sunrise and by the sea appreciating the sunset. Everyone who knew them couldn't help
envying them for their happy love. One day the man was seriously injured and lying in hospital for many days without any consciousness. The
woman guarded him by the bed in daytime calling his name nonstop and at night, she would go to the church and
pray to God until her tears ran out. A month passed by and the man was still sleeping. Finally, God was so moved
by her persistence that he would like to do her a special favor.
God said, “I can help your lover recover on condition that you promise to be a butterfly for three years. Do
you agree with that deal?” She said excitedly and firmly, “Yes, I do! Never will I regret doing that.”
The next day, the woman was transformed into a butterfly, flying hurriedly to the hospital. It turned out that
the man came to his consciousness and woke up, talking with a doctor. She could not hear what they were talking
about because she couldn't fly into the room. What she could do was to watch her beloved through the windows
helplessly.
Another spring came and the butterfly was in a hurry to fly back to see the man, only to find that there was a
pretty lady standing by him. At that moment she was so shocked that she almost fell down from the sky. She could
hardly believe her eyes. It was said that the man was seriously ill during Christmas and that that pretty female
doctor took care of him and that finally they fell in sweet love. The butterfly felt heartbroken. In the following days,
she often saw the man take the woman to the top mountain to enjoy the sunrise and to the seaside to appreciate the
sunset. All these should have belonged to her. But now they belonged to another woman.

needed to find some books for my course at college (I’m a student). I caught an early train to London, so
by early afternoon I’d bought everything that I wanted. Anyway, I’m not very fond of London, all the
noise and traffic, and I made some arrangements for that evening. So I took a taxi to Waterloo Station. I
couldn’t really afford taxis, but wanted to get the 3:30 train. Unfortunately the taxi got stuck in a traffic
jam, and by the time I got to Waterloo the train had just gone. I had to wait an hour for the next one. I
bought an evening newspaper, the “Standard”, and wandered over to the station buffet. At that time of
day it was nearly empty, so I bought a coffee and a packet of biscuits…chocolate biscuits. I’m very fond
of chocolate biscuits. There were plenty of empty tables and I found one near the window. I sat down and
began doing the crossword. I always enjoy doing crossword puzzles.
After a couple of minutes a man sat down opposite me. There was nothing special about him, except
that he was very tall. In fact he looked like a typical city businessman judging from his dark suit and a
briefcase. I didn’t say anything and I carried on with my crossword.
