In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He
left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years4
later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article
about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book,
Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks
about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have
been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American
travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his
translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California,
Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but
also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural
wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when
suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral ( 葬 礼 )
followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the
dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making
his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His
judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach.
As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of
reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of
Central Asian traditions.
24. What made Mr Bissell return to Uzbekistan?
A. His friends’ invitation. B. His interest in the country.
C. His love for teaching. D. His desire to regain health.
25. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Developing a serious mental disease.
B. Taking a guided tour in Central Asia.
C. Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan.
D. Writing an article about the Aral Sea.
26. Which of the following best describes Mr Bissell’s road trip in Uzbekistan?
A. Romantic. B. Eventful. C. Pleasant. D. Dangerous.
27. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a book. B. To explain a cultural phenomenon.
C. To remember a writer. D. To recommend a travel destination.
C
Adults understand what it feels like to be flooded with objects. Why do we often
assume that more is more when it comes to kids and their belongings? The good news is
that I can help my own kids learn earlier than I did how to live more with less.5
I found the pre-holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate
less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide
to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her
holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used
when we promised to put the money into her school fund ( 基 金 ) (our kindergarten
daughter is serious about becoming a doctor).
For weeks, I’ve been thinking of bigger, deeper questions: How do we make it a
habit for them? And how do we train ourselves to help them live with, need, and use
less? Yesterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, determined to test my own theory on this.
I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I
expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max.
I chose a red rubber ball — simple, universally available. We passed it, he tried to put it
in his mouth, he tried bouncing it, rolling it, sitting on it, throwing it. It was totally,
completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to
move on to lunch.
We both became absorbed in the simplicity of playing together. He had my full
attention and I had his. My little experiment to find joy in a single object worked for
both of us.
28. What do the words “more is more” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. The more, the better. B. Enough is enough.
C. More money, more worries. D. Earn more and spend more.
29. What made Georgia agree to sell some of her objects?
A. Saving up for her holiday. B. Raising money for a poor girl.
C. Adding the money to her fund. D. Giving the money to a sick mother.
30. Why did the author play the ball with Shepherd?
A. To try out an idea. B. To show a parent’s love.
C. To train his attention. D. To help him start a hobby.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Take It or Leave It B. A Lesson from Kids
C. Live More with Less D. The Pleasure of Giving
D
For people, who are interested in sound, the field of sound technology is definitely
making noise. In the past, sound engineers worked in the back rooms of recording
studios, but many of today’s sound professionals are sharing their knowledge and
experience with professionals in other fields to create new products based on the
phenomenon we call sound.
Sound can be used as a weapon. Imagine that a police officer is chasing a thief.
The thief tries to escape. And the officer can’t let him get away. He pulls out a special6
device, points it at the suspect, and switches it on. The thief drops to the ground. This
new weapon is called a Long Range Acoustic Device(LRAD, 远程定向声波发射
器). It produces a deafening sound so painful that it temporarily disables a person. The
noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and travels only into the ears of that
person, but it is not deadly.
For those who hunger for some peace and quiet, sound can now create silence.
Let’s say you are at the airport, and the little boy on the seat next to you is humming(哼
唱)a short commercial song. He hums it over and over again, and you are about to go
crazy. Thanks to the Silence Machine, a British invention, you can get rid of the sound
without upsetting the boy or his parents. One may wonder how the Silence Machine
works. Well, it functions by analyzing the waves of the incoming sound and creating a
second set of outgoing waves. The two sets of waves cancel each other out. Simply turn
the machine on point it at the target, and your peace and quiet comes back.
Directed sound is a new technology that allows companies to use sound in much
the same way spotlights(聚光灯)are used in the theater. A spotlight lights up only one
section of a stage; similarly, a "spotsound" creates a circle of sound in one targeted area.
This can be useful for businesses such as restaurants and stores because it offers a new
way to attract customers. Restaurants can offer a choice of music along with the various
food choices on the menu, allowing customers more control over the atmosphere in
which they are dining. Directed sound is also beginning to appear in shopping centers
and even at homes.
32. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the effect of the LRAD?
A. It causes temporary hearing loss. B. It slows down a running man.
C. It makes it easy to identify a suspect. D. It keeps the suspect from hurting others.
33. The Silence Machine is a device specially designed to ________.
A. silence the people around you B. remove the sound of commercials
C. block the incoming sound waves D. stop unwanted sound from affecting you
34. What feature do spotsounds and spotlights share?
A. They travel in circles. B. They clear the atmosphere.
C. They can be transformed into energy.
D. They can be directed onto a specific area.
35. What does the passage focus on?
A. How professionals invented sound products.
B. Inventions in the field of sound technology.
C. The growing interest in the study of sound.
D. How sound engineers work in their studios.

Let's take a minute to think about the water we use. The human body is 60% water
and we need to drink lots of water to be healthy. When we are thirsty we just go to the
kitchen and fill a glass with clean water.

plants grow. When we turn on a light or switch on a TV or a computer we use energy
and we need water to produce this energy.
The truth is that we are lucky enough to have clean water whenever we want, but
this is not the case for many people around the world. 37 . That's around one in 10
people in the world. If we drink dirty water,we can catch diseases from the bacteria and
become ill. Every year over 500,000 children die from diarrhea(腹泻)from dirty water.
That's around 1,400 children every day! Also,in some countries children walk many
kilometres every day to get water. 38 .Therefore, they don't have time to learn how to
read or write and don't get an education.
39 .On this day every year, countries around the world hold events to educate
people about the problems of dirty water and that clean water is something that
everyone should have around the world. At one school in the UK,children between the
ages of 10 and 15 walk 6km with six litres of water. 40 .People give them money to
do this and all the money helps get clean water to as many people as possible around the
world.
A. We use water indirectly too.
B. Every system in our body depends on water to function.
C. It is to inspire people to learn more about water-related problems
D. If children walk many hours a day to get water, they can't go to school.
E. Did you know that around 750 million people do not have clean water to drink?
F. In 1993 the United Nations decided that March 22nd is the World Day for Water.
G. In this way, they know how it feels to walk a long distance carrying heavy bottles.

Stephanie Jenouvrier at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found the future
of emperor penguins(帝企鹅)depended on international efforts to manage climate
change rather than on their 56 (able) to adapt to new environment. Climate change,

Disappearing sea ice affects these penguins 58 (direct) because they rely on it

failures for three years in a row at their second 59 (big) living place in the Antarctic.

found that global warming of 1.5°C would cause a 31 percent fall, 64 2°C a 44

There Are No Vans
To me, what Thanksgiving really means is giving good thanks, not eating turkey.
By the time I was 18 I had created my Thanksgiving ritual ( 惯 例 ). I would go out
shopping and buy enough food for one or two families. Then I would dress like a
delivery boy, go to the poorest neighborhood and just knock on a door, and would
always include a note saying “All that I ask in return is that you take good enough care
of yourself so that someday you can do the same thing for someone else.” I have
received more from this annual ritual than I have from any amount of money I’ve ever
earned, especially one such experience in New York City.
Several years ago I was in New York City with my newly married wife during
Thanksgiving. She was sad because we were not with our family. Normally she would
be home decorating the house for Christmas, but we were stuck here in a hotel room. I
said, “Honey, look, why don’t we decorate some lives today instead of some trees?”
When I told her what I always do on Thanksgiving, she got excited.I said, “Let’s go10
someplace where we can really appreciate who we are, what we are able to do and what
we can really give. Let’s go to the poor neighborhood Harlem and feed some people
there in need. We’ll go buy enough food for six or seven families for 30 days. We’ve got
enough. Let’s go do it!”
We started by getting a van (货车), but there seemed no vans in all of New York
City. The rent-a-car places were all out of vans. My wife was disappointed, and I said,
“Look, the bottom line is that if we want something, we can make it happen! All we
have to do is take action. There are plenty of vans here in New York City. Look down at
the street. Do you see all those vans? Let’s go get one!” My wife agreed and we took
action.
Para1:
We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street. __________________
Para 2:
Eventually a van drove up and the driver said yes. __________________________11

第二节:读后续写(满分 25 分)
A possible version
Para1:
We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street. I learned something about
New York drivers that day: They don’t stop; they speed up. Then we tried waiting by the light.
We’d go over, knock on the window and the driver would roll it down, looking at us in alarm,
and I’d ask if he would drive us to Harlem so we could help some people. Every time the driver
would look away quickly, furiously roll up the window and pull away without saying anything.
My wife was ready to give up, but I said, “It’s the law of averages: somebody is going to say
yes.”
Para 2:
Eventually a van drove up and the driver said yes. We were wild with joy and climbed onto
the van. Upon arrival, he led us to a store where we bought lots of food and some baskets.
Together we packed them up, carried them onto the van and went to buildings where there were12
even people living without electricity. It was a truly fulfilling experience to make even a small
difference. You see, you can make anything happen if you commit to it and take action. Miracles
like this happen every day— even in a city where “there are no vans.”

to drink and decided to drive home. I crashed a car and badly injured my right leg.14
There was a lot of negative news, but the worst thing was how I felt about myself. I couldn’t
believe I’d been so stupid!
W: You also lost your role in High Seas, didn’t you?
M: Yes. The accident was a real turning point in my life. After that, I didn’t touch alcohol again
for almost a year. Then I met my wife Kerri and had two wonderful twin boys. ⑰They have
really helped me to accept and appreciate life on and off stage.

W: Good afternoon. My name’s Debbie Green and ⑱I’m going to give you a short but
hopefully interesting introduction to working at this hospital. Because a hospital
environment can be stressful, we always encourage our staff to stay fit and have a
healthy lifestyle. So… just a few tips first. When you feel hungry, it’s often too easy to grab
something quick, because you’re tired or busy. ⑲Cooking a healthy meal takes longer,
and this is often why people live on sandwiches and fast food instead. Please don’t fall
into this unhealthy trap.
Of course, you have to do a little exercise and keep fit as well. I know you’ll have a lot of
work and may not have time to join a gym. But consider how often you take the lift, rather
than the stairs, or how often you drive rather than walk.
Moving on to health and safety, I want to point out that it’s quite OK to take a break any
time that you’re not busy. We know that when there’s an emergency you may have to miss
that cup of tea or coffee in the canteen or wherever you go, ⑳but generally you shouldn’t
work for more than three hours without a break, otherwise your attention levels will
drop and you could then make a careless mistake.
