第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分 20 分)
第一节(共 15 小题,每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个
选项中选出最佳选项。
A
All armed criminals must be treated as dangerous. They are usually nervous and unpredictable. Some
may also be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. What should you do?
Above all, remain calm. Remaining calm can have two effects: It can reduce the chance of the criminal
becoming disturbed and reduce the risk of violence. Tell yourself what to do, i.e. "be calm" rather than what
not to do, i.e. "don't panic”. Some helpful phrases are: be brave; keep quiet; move naturally, and above all,
remain calm.
Then, appear obedient. Speak only if you need to answer the criminal and always reply honestly. Keep
your answers short, clear and positive, using simple words and phrases, e.g. "The safe is closed and locked.
I only have the money in the cash drawer.”
Remain as far away from the criminal as possible. When asked to hand over the money, place it on the
counter and take a step back. This will ensure you don't crowd the criminal and go into his or her comfort
zone.
Keep your hands in sight at all times with the palms facing the criminal If you need to move your hands
out of the criminal's sight, ask them for permission. Wait for their approval before moving them.
Turning side on to the criminal can make you look less threatening by making you look smaller. It also
presents less of a target to the criminal to hit and allows you to protect yourself with your arm.
Alarms should only be raised when it is completely safe to do so.
Assist the police by noting the time of the robbery, the time the criminal left the scene and in which
direction he went, the weapons used, a description of the criminal and any evidence at the scene.
Observe criminals in a suitable way. Avoid direct eye contact with the criminal look at the chin of the
criminal and use your glance to obtain details. Record as much detail as you possibly can. You never know
what may seem unimportant may turn out to be a vital piece of evidence that can solve the case.

As a boy he was taught by his father to hunt and fish along the shores and in the forests surrounding
Lake Michigan. The Hemingways had a summer house called Windemere on Walloon Lake in northern
Michigan, and the family would spend the summer months there trying to stay cook Hemingway would either
fish the different streams that ran into the lake, or would take the row boat out to do some fishing there. He
would also go squirrel hunting in the woods near the summer house, discovering early in life the peacefulness
to be found while alone in the forest or walking through a stream. It was something he could always go back
to throughout his life, wherever he was. Nature would be the touchstone of Hemingway's life and work, and
though he often found himself living in major cities like Chicago, Toronto and Paris early in his career, once
he became successful he chose somewhat remote places to live like Key West, or San Francisco de Paula,
Cuba, or Ketchum, Idaho. All were convenient places for hunting and fishing.
When he wasn't hunting or fishing, his mother taught him the knowledge of music. Grace was an
accomplished singer who once had ambition of a career on stage, but eventually settled down with her
husband and occupied her time by giving voice and music lessons to local children, including her own.

For many years, a beautiful, white horse wandered the western plains. Native Americans saw him
before the settlers came but never got close to him. Only one person ever touched the white horse. She was
an old lady when she told the story to her grandchildren.
Gretchen's family came to Texas in a covered wagon when she was a very little girl The oxen that
pulled the wagons moved very slowly. There were no roads. The sun was hot. and the dust covered everything
in sight.
The trip was especially tiresome for little Gretchen. To make it easier, she was allowed to ride an
old horse named Nelly, a gentle animal with a slow pace. Gretchen's parents tied Gretchen securely to keep
her from falling off.
One day, one of the wagons broke a wheel. When the wheel was being repaired, Nelly wandered
along to an inviting area of green grass near the river bank with Gretchen, who had fallen asleep tied to the
horse's back.
Suddenly, Gretchen awoke with a start, from across the river came the sound of a horse's whinny.
There stood the beautiful white horse. His body was the colour of snow and his long mane and tail shone like
silver thread.
The wild horse ran into a nearby canyon, and Nelly slowly followed behind. Gretchen cried out, but
the wagon train was far away and no one could hear her Finally, the horses came to a stop in a grassy valley.
The white horse and old Nelly stood side by side eating grass.
Gretchen stared at the beautiful horse. He didn't seem at all afraid of her Slowly she reached over to
touch his neck. He lifted his head and looked at her with gentle, curious eyes. Then he put his head back
down and ate the grass. The two horses seemed to have developed a bond, and Gretchen enjoyed being with
them.
For over an hour the white horse stayed with old Nelly and Gretchen. Then just as the sun was getting
low in the sky, Gretchen heard a familiar shout. Across the valley, she could see her father and several men
headed toward her and the horses.
The white horse twitched (抽动)his ears in response to the men's shouts and then he was gone.
The men stopped to watch as he ran across the valley and out of the canyon. Never again did he come close
enough to be touched.

It goes through the laundry with your clothes. It gets hidden in mattresses (床垫)and buried like
pirates' gold. It is sometimes tom. burned and defaced. Yet it remains as valuable after all this damage.
It's money…US currency in the form of printed dollar bills. As you might expect, when millions of
printed pieces of paper are distributed among millions of people, a lot of it gets damaged. Normal wear and
tear claims most of it, but some bills really get damaged by chance.
The US Department of Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D. C. replaces
badly damaged currency as a public service. Around 30,000 customers submit an average of 530 million
every year for replacement with fresh, new money. We're not only talking about bills that have been tom in
half or defaced with mustaches added to the presidents' faces. We're talking about serious damage!
The bureau has dealt with the ashes of bundles of bills that were hidden in a mattress that caught fire
when its owner tried smoking in bed. In another instance, a farmer sent in the stomach of a cow that had
consumed hundreds of dollars in cash.
Money has been burned in a wood-burning stove. It has turned rotten while buried underground. It
has been damaged by water, chemicals, and explosives. Currency has been damaged by insects. As long as
examiners can piece together at least 51% of a bilk it can still be traded for its lull face value in new cash.
“Even if it's just white ash, ” says Gracie Scruggs, a supervisor at the bureau, "you can still see the
scrollwork (漩涡形装饰)on the paper. US currency is made out of paper that is never destroyed; I don't
care what you do to it?'
In tact quite a lot of money is destroyed every day by the federal government, not only the badly
damaged currency, but also the faded, dirty and tom dollar bills that are just too worn-out to remain in use.
The 12 Federal Reserve Banks get rid of the old currency. Bills that are unacceptable due to printing errors
are also destroyed. Just how much currency does the government destroy? A stack of one year's worth of
destroyed one-dollar bills alone would be a pile 200 miles high!12. _______is a way NOT listed in the passage to cause damage to bills.
