Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours in life than by the narrow
road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his
words.高 2018 级 9 月月考试题第 5 页,总 16 页
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents’ home in Boise in nine hours.
We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with
four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement (限制) and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways
and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb, was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to
Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the
decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting
optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let
Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They'd get back in the car
breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the
car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best
ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons.
We eventually arrived at my parents’ doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.I grew brave with
the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone
started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my
car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world
available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover
the best part of journey — and the best part of yourself.
24. Why did the author use to take freeways to her parents’ home?
A. It was less tiring. B. It would be faster and safer.
C. Her kids would feel less confined. D. She felt better with other drivers nearby.
25. What does the author discover from the trip according to Paragraph 6?
A. Freeways are where beauty hides.
B. Getting close to nature adds to the joy of life.
C. Enjoying the beauty of nature benefits one's health.
D. One should follow side roads to watch wild animals.高 2018 级 9 月月考试题第 6 页,总 16 页
26. Why did the author ask the kids to get out of the car on their way back home?
A. To give herself some time to read. B. To order some food for them.
C. To play a game with them. D. To let them cool down.
27. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Charm of the Detour B. The Road to Bravery

Alida Monaco doesn’t spend her summers doing the usual teenage work, like working at the mall.
Instead,she ‘ s studying.
It used to be that a summer job was considered a teenage thing. Today, Monaco , who has never had a
summer job, is part of growing trend teenagers focusing on their studies, even during the summer. That’s
down from 72% of Americans aged 16 to 19 who worked in July of 1978, according to the U. S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics.
Fierce competition, older workers returning to the workforce and weak economic growth are all adding
to the decrease of teenagers in the workforce. But as schoolwork grows increasingly heavy and homework
eats up more time, data suggest the biggest reason why some teens won’t be working this summer is that they
simply don’t have time.
For college - bound teens, some teachers even advise students not to waste time on a summer job.
“ Some of my students only have about six weeks off in the summer,” said Shannon Reed, a lecturer at the
University of Pittsburgh and a former high school English teacher.” I could never advise that they get jobs
during that short break. ”
Young people who don’t work may miss out on valuable skills that they’11 need control and help people
learn to deal with adult situations. But Monaco, who plans to attend Harvard, isn’t fazed by her lack of work
experience. “Maybe I have missed out on a couple of life skills, “she said. “ But I don’t think it will harm me
in way .”

Microplastics are everywhere in our environment. It's hardly surprising that the tiny fragments
have also been found in humans. A new study shows that Americans are consuming as many as
121,000 particles each year.
Measuring 50 to 500 microns in length, microplastics come from a variety of sources, including
large plastics that break down into smaller and smaller pieces. Therefore, much remains unknown
about the common existence of these materials within the human body, as well as their impact on
human health.
Hoping to fill in some of these gaps, a research team led by Kieran Cox, a PhD candidate at the
University of Victoria, looked at 26 papers assessing the amount of microplastics in commonly
consumed food items, among which are seafood, sugars, salts, honey, alcohol and water. The team
also evaluated the potential consumption of microplastics through inhalation(吸入)using previously
reported data on microplastic concentrations in the air and the Environmental Protection Agency's
reported respiration rates. Based on these data, the researchers calculated that our annual consumption
of microplastics via food and drink ranges from 39,000 to 52,000 particles. When microplastics taken
in through inhalation are taken into account, the range jumps to between 74,000 and 121,000 particles
per year.
The authors of the study found that people who drink exclusively from plastic water bottles
absorb an additional 90,000 microplastics each year, compared to 4,000 among those who only 高 2018 级 9 月月考试题第 8 页,总 16 页
consume tap water. "This shows that small decisions, over the course of a year, really matter and have
an impact." Cox says. The new study, according to its authors, was the first to investigate "the
accumulative human exposure" to microplastics. But in all likelihood, the research tells only a small
part of the entire story. Collectively, the food and drink that the researchers analyzed represent 15
percent of Americans' caloric intake. The team could not account for food groups like fruits,
vegetables and grains because there simply is not enough data on their microplastic content.
For those worried about microplastic consumption, cutting down bottled water is a good place to
start. But to the heart of the problem, we have to stop producing and using so much plastic.
32.What makes it difficult to know microplastics commonly exist in the human body?
A.The quality. B.The quantity. C.The shape. D.The size.
33.How did Kieran Cox's team calculate the potential consumption of microplastics?
A.By studying papers. B.By comparing the impacts.
C.By analyzing the data. D.By conducting experiments.
34.Which of the following is true according to the text?
A.Drinking less plastic bottled water helps to take in fewer microplastics.
B.The study is among the earliest to investigate human exposure to microplastics.
C.Cox's team gained comprehensive information of microplastics taken in by humans.
D.People consume 74,000 to 121,000 particles of microplastics per year from food and drink.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Potential Problems of Microplastics
B.Microplastics Coming From Various Sources
C.Microplastics Found Within Human Bodies
D.The Impact of Microplastics on Human Health

Text 10
M: Good afternoon, everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me.
If not, please let me know. I am Prof. John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can
probably tell, this is one of popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time these courses are offered, this
room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least
a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure, and there are many. There are
about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly
remember all of these words. Well, for one thing you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all
of the words in the English language. Besides, there are shortcuts. Shortcuts? Yes, for example, if you know
how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you’ll
understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way.
Knowing the rules will help you to master a large number of words. This is probably the No. 1 reason why
this class is so popular.
