If you think engineering might be a good choice for you, a summer engineering program is a great way to learn more about the field and expand your experiences. Below are some excellent summer engineering programs.‎ Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation This introductory engineering course for rising juniors and seniors is offered by Johns ‎ Hopkins University at several locations across the country. Engineering Innovation teaches critical thinking and applied problem-solving skills for future engineers through lectures, research and projects. If the student achieves an A or B in the program, they will also receive three transferable credits from Johns Hopkins University. The program runs for four or five days a week over four to five weeks, depending on the location. Most locations offer commuter programs only, but the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus in Baltimore also offers a residential option.‎ Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES)‎ The Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers this enrichment program for high school juniors interested in engineering, science and entrepreneurship. Students select five of 14 rigorous (严格的) academic courses to study over the six weeks of the program, during which time they have several opportunities to network with a diverse group of individuals within the fields of science and engineering. Students also share and celebrate their own cultures. MITES is scholarship-based; those students selected for the program need only provide their own transportation to and from the MIT campus.‎ Summer Engineering Exploration Camp Hosted by the University of Michigan, this program is a one-week residential camp for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in engineering. Participants have the opportunity to explore several different areas of engineering during engineering workplace tours, group projects, and presentations by students, faculty and professional engineers. Campers also enjoy recreational events and experience a university residential atmosphere in the University of Michigan dorms.‎ Exploring Your Options at the University of Illinois This residential summer engineering camp for rising high school juniors and seniors is offered by the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering program, headquartered at the University of Illinois. It was a restful Sunday and between alarms I rushed to the office to read a copy of the New York Times. I read an article on the Book Review section which openly stated what I thought to be a calumny — that William Butler Yeats had gone beyond his Irishness and was forever to be known as a universal poet. As I read it, my blood began to boil.‎ There were few things I was more proud of than my Irish root, and ever since I first picked up a book of his poems from a shelf when I was in the military, Yeats had been my favorite Irish writer, followed by Sean O’Casey and James Joyce.‎ I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote out a letter of anger to the editor. Throughout Yeats’ poetry, his view of the world and the people in it was basically Irish. He had lived his life and written his poetry in a truly Irish way. It was annoying to think Irishness was something to be transcended (超越).‎ I don’t know why I felt it my duty to safeguard the reputation of the world’s greatest poet. I just knew that I had to write that letter.‎ After my letter got published, I received a letter from The New Yorker, asking for an interview. When my article Fireman Smith appeared in that magazine, the editor of a large publishing firm called me, asking if I was interested in writing a book about my life. I had little confidence to write a whole book, though the subject was worthy. I wrote Report From Engine Co. 82 in six months, and it sold really well. In the years that followed, I wrote three more best-sellers.‎ Being a writer had been far from my expectations. How had it happened? I often found myself thinking about it, and my thoughts always came back to that letter to the New York Times. For me, the writing was a natural consequence of the passion (热情) I felt and the subjects represented the great values burning within me as I wrote.‎ Over the years, my five children have come to me with one dilemma or another. My answer is always the same. Think about what you’re feeling and measure the heat of the fire in your heart, for that is your passion. Your education and your experience will guide you toward making a right decision, but your passion will enable you to make a difference in whatever you do. That’s what I learned the day I stood up for Ireland’s greatest poet.‎ ‎24.Why did the author write to New York Times?‎ A.To present his love for literature.‎ B.To spread Irish culture to the world.‎ C.To show off his writing.‎ D.To defend the reputation of an Irish poet.‎ ‎25.What does the underlined word “calumny” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?‎ A.A false statement. B.A great honor.‎ C.A total lie. D.A good reason.‎ ‎26.Which statement is true according to the text?‎ A.The author thinks Yeats is more universal than Irish.‎ B.The author’s passion is the key to his success in writing.‎ C.Yeats’s poems inspires the author to be a writer.‎ D.The author believes education and experience count most.‎ ‎27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A.Yeats, my Irish hero B.My writing career C.A letter that changed my life D.Honesty is the best policy C ‎ Ants know when an earthquake is about to strike, researchers have discovered. Their behavior changes significantly prior to the quake and they resume normal functioning only a day after it. Gabriele Berberich of the University Duisburg-Essen in Germany presented these findings on Thursday at the European Geosciences Union annual meeting in Vienna according to LiveScience.‎ Berberich and her colleagues discovered that red wood ants preferred to build their colonies right along active faults in Germany. They counted 15,000 mounds (土堆))lining the faults. These faults are the places where the earth violently bursts in earthquakes.‎ Using a special camera that tracked changes in activity. Berberich and her colleagues tracked the ants round the clock for three years, 2016 to 2019. They found that the ants' behavior changed only when the quake was over magnitude (级数)2. There were 10 earthquakes between magnitude 2.0 and 3.2 during this period, and many smaller ones. Humans can also sense quakes of over magnitude 2 only.‎ According to Berberich, normal ant activity consists of going about collecting food etc, during the day and resting in the night But before an earthquake, the ants didn't go back to their mound in the night and moved around outside it. This strange and abnormal behavior continued till a day after the earthquake, Berberich told a news conference, according to Livescience.‎ How do ants know an earthquake is coming? Berberich suggested that they could either be picking up changing gas emissions or noting tiny changes in the Earth's magnetic fields (磁场). "Red wood ants have special cells which can detect changes in carbon dioxide levels. They also have special cells for detecting electromagnetic fields." she said. Berberich and her colleagues are planning to continue the research in areas where there are more and bigger earthquakes ‎28.What's the meaning of the underlined word "resume" in Paragraph 1?‎ A.Form. B.Avoid.‎ C.Recover. D.Improve.‎ ‎29.What's the function of the first paragraph?‎ A.To lead to the main topic. B.They are too excited to rest.‎ C.They get lost on their way home. D.They refuse to go inside their nests.‎ ‎31.What can we conclude from the last paragraph?‎ A.Ants can only detect smaller earthquakes.‎ B.The result of the research is completely reliable.‎ C.Ants may have two ways to predict earthquakes.‎ D.Researchers don't know how ants predict earthquakes.‎ D ‎ Luis Reynoso says he’s always tried to get involved (牵涉) in his children’s education: attending meetings on school-improvement projects and providing classroom food. But when his youngest daughter’s school invited families to attend a nine-week program Let’s Change the Course organized by a leading education advocacy group here to learn about parenting and school participation, he realized his past efforts barely scratched the surface.‎ Each weekly session touched on different parenting themes, like setting up a special space at home for kids to do homework, like the importance of confidence. One of the most helpful sessions, he recalls, focused on what a child should know academically in each grade and how to talk to teachers about his daughter’s performance. “The workshops really woke me up,”says Mr. Reynoso.‎ Levels of parental participation in Mexican schools have long been low. Many people commonly believe a child's education is the school s job to get involved. In some parts of the country, a mother's or father's own lack of education can play into a sense that they have nothing to contribute. And even in private schools, where there might be more adults with fixed jobs and the participation is very rare, with some parents viewing their tuition (学费) bill as their educational contribution. There are also cases where the schools themselves ignore the potential of parents in a child's education, discouraging communication between families and schools.‎ But the importance of family participation is something many non-profit, education advocates and recently the government are starting to home in on Mexico. Part of Mexico’s 2013 national education reform stresses the importance of parents playing a more active role in their child’s education, encouraging an increase in parental-participation programs, including Let’s Change the Course.‎ Susana Castellanos, headmaster of a school in Mexico City, says, “People are recognizing you have to work together to create happy successful citizens. It’s no longer acceptable to set apart ‎ the roles of teacher vs. parent vs. school headmaster.”‎ ‎32.What does Reynoso mean by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?‎ A.His previous efforts were in vain.‎ B.He missed the key point of participation.‎ C.His daughter disagreed with what he did.‎ D.He failed to catch the importance of school.‎ ‎33.What did Reynoso find most beneficial about Let’s Change the Course?‎ A.The necessity to set up a space for kids to do homework.‎ B.The academic requirements for kids in different periods.‎ C.The importance of knowing children’s performance.‎ D.The ways to increase students’ confidence.‎ ‎34.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?‎ A.How to contribute more to children’s education.‎ B.How to know the levels of parental participation in Mexican schools.‎ C.Why schools failed to provide chances for parents to get involved,‎ D.Why parents played a less active role in school education in Mexico.‎ ‎35.What influence did Mexico’s education reform have?‎ A.The number of parental-participation programs rose.‎ B.Many non-profit educational organizations were set up.‎ C.Teachers role in school education started to get increased.‎ D.Parents began to attach importance to children's education.‎ 第二节.七选五 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Develop Appropriate Self-Confidence Under most circumstances having self-confidence is a good thing. 36. It is this strong sense of confidence that allows them to go out in the world and reach for their goals.‎ But can you have too much self-confidence? 37. In most cases, knowing your strengths and having the assuredness to go out and take risks are admirable qualities. But when this confidence makes you inflexible, opposed to trying new things, and incapable of listening to others, it can become harmful to success and well-being. So what can people do to ensure that their self-confidence is realistic, authentic and socially appropriate?‎ ‎38. Whether you are evaluating your own success or offering praise to your children, try to place a greater emphasis on the work that went into the task rather than just focus on how things turned out. You cannot always control how things go, but you can control the amount of work you put into achieving your goals.‎ Keep learning new things. Even if you are highly confident about your skills in an area, keep looking for new challenges. It is easy to become overconfident if you think you know everything there is to know about a subject. Finding new challenges to overcome does sharpen your skills. 39.‎ Listen to what others have to say. Overconfidence can sometimes cause people to become rigid and even arbitrary. Instead of assuming that your way is the right or only way, try to keep an open mind. 40. However, it is important to listen in order to gain a new perspective.‎ A.Focus on the effort, not the outcome.‎ B.Is overconfidence definitely a good thing?‎ C.You might not always agree with other people.‎ D.Having too much self-confidence is beneficial to us.‎ E.Are you teaching in a different way and extremely excellent?‎ F.Confident people tend to be more successful in a wide variety of fields.‎ G.Finding new challenges also reminds you that there're fresh ways of thinking about things.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题,每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空白 处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ ‎ I was shopping in the supermarket when I heard the young voice. “Mom, come here!
