Tiny as they are, bats have the ability to "see" in the dark by using a special skill called echolocation (回声定位法). They make noises and wait for sound waves, or an echo, to bounce back off objects. They can tell the distance of various objects by how quickly the sound waves bounce back off them. If no sound bounces back, they can then fly forward.
This special ability has been copied in the human world for a long time, such as in submarines and planes. But apart from helping vehicles "see" where they are, what if blind people could use echolocation for themselves? American Daniel Kish, who is blind, is known as "Batman". This isn't because he walks around in a cape (披风) and a mask, but because he has a bat-like ability to locate where he is through sharp clicks he makes by moving his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Kish is so skilled at echolocating that he
can ride a bike and hike on his own.
Recently, a research carried out at the University of Durham in England shed some light on the power of human echolocation. Kish, as well as other volunteers, worked with a group of scientists who studied the way blind people listen to the echoes that they produce from clicks. The team found that people were capable of hearing even very faint echoes, ones far fainter than had been previously thought.
Lore Thaler, lead scientist of the group, said, "We found that in some conditions, they were really faint-about 95 percent softer than the actual clicks, but the echolocators were still able to sense this."
Andrew Kolarik, another expert in echolocation, told BBC News that echolocation "can be very useful at providing . information at face or chest height" and could help people "avoid objects like low hanging branches that might not get detected by the cane or a guide dog "
According to BBC News, echolocation is a skill blind people can acquire and develop, just like learning a language. As Kolarik said, "Teaching echolocation skills could provide blind people with the means of exploring new places."
24.What does "this special ability" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The ability to make noises in the dark.
B. The ability to bounce back off objects.
C. The ability to measure the distance quickly.
D . The ability to use sound waves to echolocate.
25. What do we know about Daniel Kish from the text?
A. He is fond of riding a bike and hiking alone.
B. He is able to hear echoes he produces from clicks.
C. He is called "Batman” because he looks like a bat.
D . He conducted the experiment to circulate echolocation.
26. What is Kolarik's attitude towards the future use of echolocation in blind people?
A. Ambiguous. B. Hopeful. C. Tolerant. D . Doubtful.
27. What's the best title for the text?
A. Echolocation in Human World. B. A Very Special Batman.
C. Finding New Way to "See". D . A Breakthrough in echoing.

"If you don't behave,I'll call the police" is a lie that parents generally use to get their young children to behave. Parents' lies work in the short terms, but a new study led by NTU Singapore suggests that they're associated with harmful effects when the child becomes an adult.
The research team asked 379 Singaporean young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children, how much they lie to their parents now,and how well they adjust to adulthood challenges. Adults who reported being lied to more as children
were more likely to report deceiving their parents in their adulthood. They also said they faced greater difficulty in meeting psychological and social challenges.
Lead author Assistant Professor Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore's School of Social Sciences said,"Parenting by lying can seem to save time especially when the real reasons behind why parents want children to do something is complicated to explain. When parents tell children that‘honesty is the best policy',but display dishonesty by lying, such behaviour can send conflicting messages to their children. Parents' dishonesty may eventually break trust and promote dishonesty in children. Our research suggests that parenting by lying is a practice that has bad consequences for children when they grow up. Parents should be aware of this and consider alternatives to lying, such as acknowledging children's feelings, giving information so children know what to expect, offering choices and problem-solving together, to help children develop good behaviour."
The analysis found that parenting by lying could place children at a greater risk of developing problems that the society disapproves, such as aggression and rule-breaking behaviour. Some limitations of the study include relying on what young adults report about their past experience of parents' lying."Future research can explore using more information providers, such as parents,to report on the same topic,"suggested Asst Prof Setoh.
28.Why is a parental lie mentioned in the first paragraph?___
A.To introduce the topic for discussion.
B.To tell a popular way to educate children.
C.To prove the great influence of the police.
D.To show the harmful effects of parental lies.
29.The underlined word "deceiving" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to"___".
A.worrying B.abusing C.disappointing D.cheating
30.According to the research, which of the following can parents do?___
A.Give children chances to choose.
B.Force good behaviour on children.
C.Let children solve problems alone.
D.Stop children knowing what to expect.
31.What does the last paragraph imply about the study?___
A.It is quite controversial.
B.It is rather meaningless.
C.It needs to be perfected.
D.It demands honest responses.

Promise Sawyers, a 10-year-old girl in Nashville, Tenn is inspiring people old and young after making a video before going to school "bigger and better" with her natural hair, just one day after she was made fun of for her afro.
Promise Sawyers' motivational video was posted online by her mom Qui Daugherty, after the 5th-grader secretly recorded it on Daugherty's phone. In it,Sawyers explained that she was feeling "some type of way" after her classmates had mean things to say after she wore her natural hair the day before. But she was determined not to let it bring her down, and wore it the same way the following day."Don't allow anyone to steal your joy," Promise said."Don't give them that much power."
Daugherty says that Promise has been surrounded by that type of positivity her whole life. She's always taught her daughter to "meet a negative with a positive", even when somebody is trying to bring her down. And although this example seems like one of the more disheartening(令人气馁的) ones that Promise has faced after starting at a new school, her video proved that she took her mom's advice to heart.
Now nearly 2 million views later, people everywhere are responding to the video. "We had no idea the impact that it was going to make and the amount of messages," Daugherty said."It's made a huge impact behind the scenes that has blessed me personally."
Daugherty jokes that Promise doesn't understand how influential her words are. Instead, the 10-year-old is just excited about the millions of views.
"I just tell her not to focus on the numbers," Daugherty says."Let's find a way we can be impactful behind this and make an influence and inspire people. That's all we want."
32.What does the underlined word "afro" in Paragraph 1 refer to?___
A.A hairstyle. B.A disability. C.An attitude. D.A video.
33.What did Promise decide to do after being teased by her classmates?___
A.Seek some advice from her mother.B.Make herself look bigger and better.

C.Make necessary changes. D.Share her joy with others.
35.How did Daugherty feel about people's response to the video?___

Federal laws have been in place to protect archaeological (考古学的) resources for more than a century.. 36 However, decades later the law's language was deemed too vague to offer adequate protection from looters (劫掠者) and vandals ( 故意破坏公物者). In response, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act was enacted in 1979.___ 37
Yet theft, vandalism, and looting continue to pose serious threats to our cultural
resources, and land managing agencies, tribal communities, and others are faced with the challenge of protecting heritage sites. A 2010 National Park Service report revealed that more than 3,000 cases of vandalism and looting on federal lands were documented within a 3-year period, and many more are likely unreported. Destructive behaviors range from the harmful act of artifact collecting to the criminal activity of looting and grave robbing.__38 For example, some artifacts (古手工艺品) are removed from their contexts by collectors.
Ancestral sites and surface artifacts are abundant in the Southwest. These material remains maintain connections to ancient traditions and cultural identity. 39 Acts of theft and destruction cause real and lasting harm, depriving us of the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the history of our land. Looters disturb human remains and steal from graves for financial gain, thereby negatively impacting the spiritual health and wellbeing of Native American communities. 40 A shared goal among many archaeologists is to increase public awareness to help stop this destruction, but we are only subset of preservation- minded groups. The support of other parties like tribal communities, environmental advocates and historians is necessary to protect archaeological resources and sacred landscapes.
A. It is of primary importance to work with local police.
B. Signs of these activities are found across the landscape.
C. Therefore, they are of cultural and spiritual importance.
D. There is no single or easy solution to this serious problem.
E. They serve as significant contributors to local and national economies.
F. The Antiquities Act, passed in 1906, was the first measure taken to preserve sites.
G. It forbids the damage to archaeological resources on public lands without a permit.
