Unit 2 English around the world 能力提升卷 班级___________ 姓名___________ 学号____________ 分数____________ (考试时间:60 分钟 试卷满分:100 分) 一、阅读理解(每小题 2 分,满分 20 分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Personal transportation in America is mostly by car. Most families have two cars, one for the husband and the other for the wife. Usually they also have a double garage. But in large cities, many people take a bus or a subway to work. If they drive their cars, they may have to pay a high fee for parking the car in the city. In a few cities, some workers come by train. To travel from city to city, most Americans use the plane unless the distance is very short. The plane is very quick because they don’t want to spend too much time traveling when they work. Some cities located near the water use boats to bring people to work. It’s the same in a city in China like Wuhan. People there use the boats to cross the Yangtze River. The right use of transportation improves American life by saving time. They always choose the best way to get to work so they have more time for family life. 1.Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage? A.Personal transport. B.Public transport C.Transport between cities D.Transport between countries 2.Which is the best title of the passage? My father had been separated from our family, and my mother had recently died of a disease related to AIDS. What I remember most about such nights is lying on the cold stone floor and using my backpack for a pillow. Even though I had lost my family, I made choices every single day to turn my life around. There was the haven( 避 难 所 )for homeless teenagers called the Door, a non-profit( 非 营 利 的 ) organization that provided me with guidance, medical care and food, all of which kept me going while I completed my homework in train stations and under hallway lights. Perhaps it was the most surprising help because I did not seek out — it found me. The New York Times told my story. In the weeks that followed, dozens of strangers reached out to me from all across the United States. At my high school, I began receiving handwritten letters of encouragement. Strangers showed up bearing clothes, books, and even hugs. Since the article mentioned I was applying to Harvard, one woman knitted(编织) a blanket for me. She put this note in the box it was posted in: "It gets cold in those dorms. May you warm yourself knowing that people care about you." With the help of these people, my life today is not like at all my life then. I graduated not only from high school but also from Harvard University. Before these people — some of them nameless — I just didn’t realize how good people could be. But now I do, and I can say that the people who helped me have forever changed me. They are the reason behind my decision to join the board at the Door so that I can be part of a small team of people opening a high school for homeless teenagers. They are the reason I dedicate my life to opening pathways for others. And they are the reason I travel around the world helping people change their own lives. 3.According to the passage, the author . A.tried to change her life B.often slept at friends’ homes C.felt lonely because of her illness D.was proud of her father 4.The third paragraph mainly tells about . A.how the author applied to Harvard B.how the author struggled for her ideal life C.how The New York Times helped the author D.how people helped the author in different ways 5.Which of the following is the correct order to describe the author’s life?a. The newspaper reported her story. b. She graduated from Harvard University. c. She slept on the cold floor at night. d. She joined the committee at the Door. e. Her mother died of illness. A.d→e→c→a→b B.e→c→d→a→b C.e→c→a→b→d D.b→c→d→e→a 6.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Patience is a virtue. B. Love can be passed on. C. Time waits for no man. D. Honesty leads to success. I made choices every single day to turn my life around"可知,作者 努力改变她的生活。 In the weeks that followed, dozens of strangers reached out to me from all across the United States." C English is a very interesting language. It has borrowed words from many other languages. Immigrants(移民) coming into the United States have contributed many words to the language, which have kept their original pronunciation. “Coolie” and “kowtow” were taken from the Chinese language, “kamikaze from the Japanese, “shampoo” from India, “blitz” from German, “amigo” and “Los Angeles” from Spanish and so on. Many students have studied English for years, some as many as eight. However, some students still have difficulty in speaking fluent English. Some know many words but are unable to discern them when native speakers use them. In our Oral English classes we will focus on speaking and listening to native English speakers. For this reason, because we are trying to train your ears to hear English and your mouths to speak intelligible (易理解的) English, we will have a rule that ONLY ENGLISH will be spoken in our English classes. Anyone speaking Chinese in class will be required to pay a fine in order to encourage the speaking and understanding of English. If teachers enter a classroom and discover that anyone is speaking Chinese, they will require everyone in the room to pay the fine. It is everyone’s job to enforce the English-Only rule. It is for your benefit. It is because we want to accustom (使习惯于) your ears to hearing English. Other subjects may be learned solely from books but the only way to learn a foreign language is to SPEAK IT! Students are often nervous about speaking in class at first but we hope to make the classes fun, so you will forget your nervousness and learn to speak out. Enjoy your classes. 7. The first paragraph is mainly about_________________. A.the difficulty of learning English B.different words in different languages C.how interesting and various English is D.the immigrants' contributions to America 8. The underlined word “discern” in Para. 2 can be replaced by _____________. A.notice B.understand C.hear D.speak 9. In the author's opinion, the only way to learn a language well is to __________. A.listen to it on the radio B.learn it from books C.play games with it D.speak it often 10. The article is probably aimed at_______________. A.Japanese students B.German students C.Chinese students D.Indian students 【答案】C 【解析】段落大意题。从第一段的前两句话“English is a very interesting language. It has borrowed words from many other languages.”可知,本文围绕英语展开,说英语是一门很有趣的语言,它从其他的语言 当中引进了很多的词汇。故选 C 项。 27. 【答案】B 【解析】词义猜测题。分析划线词所在句子可知,句意:一些人知道许多的词,但是在当以英语为 母语的人使用这些词的时候他们却不能理解。所以,“discern”的意思应为“仔细识别,明白”。故选 B 项。 28. 【答案】D 【解析】细节理解题。根据最后一段第一句话“Other subjects may be learned only from books but the only way to learn a foreign language is to SPEAK IT!”可知,在作者看来学习一门外语的唯一办法是经 常说它。故选 D 项。 29. 【答案】C 【解析】推理判断题。根据第二段第六句“Anyone speaking Chinese in class will be required to pay a fine in order to encourage the speaking and understanding of English.”可知,为了鼓励说英语和用英语来理解, 任何在课堂上说汉语的人都会被罚款。由此可推断,文章是写给中国学生的。故选 C 项。 二、七选五 (每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Things I Wish I'd Known in High School Sometimes high school seems like a necessary evil. Now at the end of my college journey, I know that there are still more things I could have done to make my high school experience more beneficial. 1 Take a class that scares you during high school. The experience will definitely prepare you for future academic challenges. Don't worry about your grades too much. Getting a B is not the end of the world. 2 I have started college with all A's since seventh grade, and it was hard to deal with not being able to repeat that. I stayed away from taking some harder courses I might have done well in because I was afraid of doing poorly. Now, I can fully accept that if I try my best in at least one harder class and get a B+, that is still something to be proud of. Find your own de-stressing(解压) routine. Another essential skill to begin building in high school is how to manage work and stress. Maybe you deal with stress by going for a run, or watching a silly movie. Talk with a friend for a while or play with your dog. 3 Spend your summers wisely. Don't take on a full-time job the first summer you decide to work. 4 Do find something to do that will make the ten weeks worthwhile. Look for programs that take you to interesting places, or a job that will give you insights into something you might be interested in. Finally, remember to have fun. Your life does not depend on high school. 5 You will have plenty of time to work hard in college and beyond. Be prepared, but don't stress out too much about it. If you can make your high school experience fun, you will have no problem doing the same for your life in college and beyond. A. In fact, it's a kind of good thing. B. Take full advantage of your brain. C. You do have to be active in making friends. D. Do your best, but leave time for fun with friends. E. They will be improved if you make great efforts. F. Find out what relaxes you, and you will feel less stressed. G. Forty hours a week will be a huge shock and you'll have plenty of time for that in the future. 5.D 本段讲的是要开心,选项 D 中的 leave time for fun with friends 符合本段内容,故选 D 项。 三、完形填空(每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Two weeks earlier, my son, Ben, had got in touch.
