Ⅱ.阅读理解
English teenagers will receive cooking lessons in schools. The idea is to
encourage healthy eating to solve the problem that many people are overweight. Also, it worries people that basic cooking and food preparation skills are being lost because
parents use too much preprepared fast food.
Cooking was once regarded as an important part of education in England—even
if it was mainly for girls. In recent years cooking has become less important in
schools. But the rising level of obesity(肥胖的) has led to rethink about the food that
children are given and the skills they should be taught.
“What we want is to teach young people how to do basic, simple meals, which
they can use now at home and then in their life,” said Ed Balls, an education expert.
The new lessons will start in September, but some schools without kitchens willbe given a longer time to prepare. Also, there may be a shortage of teachers with
the right skills, since schools have been teaching food technology rather than
practical cooking. Besides, the lessons for handon cooking will only be one hour a
week for one term. But the wellknown cookery writer, Pru Leith, believe it will be
worth it.
“If we'd done this thirty years ago, we might not have to face the problem about
obesity and lack of knowledge about food and so on. Every child should know how to
cook, not just so that they'll be healthy, but because it's a life skill which is a real
pleasure.”
The renewed interest in cooking is an effort to reduce the obesity rate, which is
almost the highest in Europe, and according to the government, half of all British
people will be obese in 25 years if present trends(趋势) are not halted.

(2018·山东济南历城期末)There are so many expressions in American English
that sound pleasant but are not. 1. When someone says they have to “face
the music”, it does not mean they are going to a concert. “Facing the music” means
to accept and deal with the punishment of an action.
2. For example, “I can't face another night of camping! It's cold and
rainy”. Or “In life, you must face your fears”. Face used in this way is very common.
But now, let's go back to “face the music”. Imagine a friend asks you to take care
of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says. “Thanks so much for
watching my car while I'm away. But please, do not drive it. It is an extremely fast
car.” 3. You want to show off (炫耀)to some friends. So, you drive it
around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and
drive it into a stop sign. Bang!
When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and “face the
music”. The “music” here is the result of your actions. It could be losing her
friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. 4.
5. To “take your medicine” means to accept the results from
something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in
it” they mean you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results.
A.But you do not listen.
B.“Face the music” is a good example.
C.Whatever the music is, you must face it.
D.American often use the word “face” in this way.
