It was a bad night for Jack. ⑱His research in a neighboring town had taken longer than he expected. It was late and he was very tired when he drove home.He returned into his building’s parking lot,but all the spaces were full.He drove back out onto the street looking for a parking lot.The first block was full. The next block was almost empty.Jack didn’t see a No Parking sign, but he suspected that if it were allowed there, most of the spaces would be filled. Then he saw a small parking lot with two free spaces. He was so glad to see them that he didn’t even think to read the sign by the entrance. He drove in,parked and hurried home to go to bed.
The next morning he went back to the lot to get his car.It was gone!
He ran home and telephoned the city police to say that his car had been stolen. It took the police only a minute to tell him what had happened. ⑲His car had been on a private lot.It had been pulled away.
Jack had to take a taxi to the city garage far from the center of town. ⑳He had to pay a$ 40 fee to get the car back.In addition,he got a parking ticket.

(2016·浙江绍兴高三期中)A girl in Danville, Pennsylvania is recovering at home from a spinal(脊柱的) operation. But she isn’t missing any school.Instead, she is keeping up with her peers by using a remote-controlled robot.
The robot was invented by Double Robotics, of Seattle. It was bought by the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit and loaned(借出) to the middle school.Maddie Rarig, 11, a sixth-grader, is now able, from her bed, to be in her math and English classes in real time. She can interact with her teachers, and—perhaps more importantly—her classmates.
“We call the robot Maddie, because it is very much her in the classroom,” said her math teacher, Shayna Heitzelman.“We positioned the face of the robot where she can see everything going on in front of the class.Maddie can move closer or farther away as needed. She can turn the robot around to face the class. The thing is, and this is amazing, she has this huge smile on her face, which you can see on the robot. And the kids, her friends, love it.”
The robot is basically a Segway body with an iPad brain serving as its eyes.Maddie is able to control the forward, backward, left or right movement of the robot from home using a smartphone or computer.
“When the class breaks into discussion groups, Maddie can be part of the group. She can

(2016·陕西西安音乐学院附中期中)Night vision technology has been around for a while, but it’s only really used by professionals due to its big size. But what if night vision was something you could fit into a pair of eye glasses? You could keep a pair in your bag if you were going to be walking home alone in the dark. All this and more could be possible thanks to a new development

by researchers.“We can make the entire design super-thin,” said Zhaohui Zhong, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Michigan.“It can be fitted into a contact lens (隐形眼镜).”
The most effective night vision technology works by catching the infrared (红外线的) part of the light.Zhong suggests that the technology could therefore be used for more than just night vision. It could help doctors monitor blood flow without having to move a patient or take them to any scans, or be used by art historians to examine layers of paint underneath the surface. It’s not quite X-ray vision but it’s pretty close.
Previous attempts to use graphene (石墨烯) in this way have suffered from the material’s insensitivity towards parts of the light. The team from Michigan’s breakthrough was to create a sandwich of layers, with a barrier placed between two slices of graphene and an electrical current sent through the bottom part. When the infrared light hits the top layer of graphene it drives away electrons as normal, a process that is then amplified(放大) by the electrical current. And you get night vision.
“Our work pioneered a new way to detect light,” said Zhong.“You will have these cameras on your smartphone, on your vehicle to drive at night, for security, and so on.”

(2016·辽宁沈阳二中高三期中)When Vivek Sodera, 30, awoke with a swollen knee after a night out with friends, he knew he should probably see a doctor. The problem was, “My knee was so hurt that I had to stay on my couch. And I didn’t want to pay for cabs to and from the hospital,” says Sodera.
So Sodera grabbed his phone and opened Doctor on Demand, a new app(应用程序) that allows users to video-chat with doctors to get medical help in real time.He typed in his symptoms, got paired with a nearby specialist and sent him a few photos of his knee.Within minutes, the doctor informed Sodera that he had probably dislocated his knee and would need an MRI—which he scheduled for the following week.
Previously reserved mostly for rural communities that lack access to health care, telemedicine is becoming increasingly mainstream, thanks to apps like Doctor on Demand, which is backed by Dr.Phil, and HealthTap which attracts more than 1 million users.
For patients, telemedicine apps are a cheap, easy alternative to nonemergency consultations.Asking text-based questions on HealthTap and AskMD is free, and a 15-minute appointment via Doctor on Demand costs $40 (roughly the same as a regular co-pay, except it doesn’t require insurance). For doctors, the apps are a tool to attract new patients and make a little extra cash during their downtime. And for hospitals, they’re a means to streamline care for existing patients. As Murray Aitken, executive director of the health care consultancy IMS Institute, puts it, “We are going to see a major change in how medicine is practiced and where.”
But there are concerns.Although telemedicine apps can be useful for diagnosing routine illnesses like the flu and assessing minor injuries like Sodera’s dislocated knee, they’re not meant to totally replace in-person doctor-s examinations—especially for potentially serious illnesses like chest pain. It’s also not ideal to get prescriptions from a doctor who doesn’t have your electronic medical-record history on hand.
The key, says Aitken, is striking a balance—and using telemedicine to replace unnecessary visits.“If there is a way to keep healthy patients out of the doctor’s office through telemedicine,” he says, “that’s a good thing.”

For the Travel section, writers and editors selected special items to profile from a dozen cities.
Brussels:Chocolate
Nearly half the chocolate consumed in the world is eaten in Europe, and Belgium—with average consumption of 14.99 pounds per person a year—certainly covers its fair share. While Brussels, the country’s capital, is home to hundreds of chocolate makers, what makes a visit necessary is the rich heritage of traditional chocolate makers.
Budapest:Paprika(红辣椒)
The job of preparing Hungarian paprika was once considered too dangerous for mothers to do. A woman who touched her children upon returning from work risked burning them, so only the elderly and unmarried were allowed the delicate task of separating the skin from the flesh. But by the early 20th century, sweeter varieties and a machine turned paprika into a common feature of all Hungarian cuisine.
Lisbon:Tiles(瓷砖)
Is there a bluer country than Portugal? The blue sky and Atlantic Ocean embrace the land. The blue moods of Fado, the dark folk music, form the national soundtrack. And all across Portugal, the typically blue designs of azulejo—ceramic tiles—are spread across churches, castles, palaces, university halls, parks. The result is a beautiful land of Christian saints, Portuguese kings, historical glories, aristocrats(贵族) at leisure, seascapes and so on.
Madrid:Guitars

Four smart ways to help build your child’s vocabulary
“Johnny next door can name his colors, but Gloria can barely even say her own name. What am I doing wrong?” 36 But the good news is that children really are born to absorb the language around them. The following are some ways to help build your child’s vocabulary.
Never use baby talk.
Young children understand so much more than they can initially repeat. 37 Of course you’re not going to start speaking to a baby in Shakespearean English, but it’s important to speak to them the way that you’d speak to anybody else.Even if your child can’t or doesn’t use the same vocabulary when he talks, it’s helping his language development.
Follow your child’s lead.
38 Trying to turn her attention away from the clown (小丑) so that you can point out the word for “elephant”, is not only frustrating, it’s probably not doing much good.Instead of driving the

conversation, you’ll be more successful in making words “stick”, if you look at what your child is paying attention to.
Encourage any kind of reading
Even young kids who haven’t yet learned to read will memorize books that they’ve heard frequently. So go ahead and have your child “fill in” words as you’re reading together. 39 For older children who are already readers, it’s important to let them choose their own reading material.
40
At two years of age, some kids may only use about 30 words while others may be able to use 300 words. But there’s very little evidence that those children with 30 words at age two will have worse outcomes by the time they are five or six years of age.
A.So don’t talk down to them.
B.Correct pronunciation gently.
C.Don’t panic if your child is slow to talk.
D.It will help with their vocabulary development.
E.That sort of comparison can lead to a lot of parental anxiety.
F.Let’s say you’re taking a trip to the circus with your young daughter.
G.The best thing that parents can do is really just talk to their children all the time.

at what she saw. There were fifteen cents beside the empty dish—her tip!
77.it指代前面提到的a plain ice cream,是单数含义。
付给某人多少钱”表达为“pay sb.+钱+for sth.”,“花钱买某物”表达为“pay for sth.”。
如果将returned 改为came也可以,came back在此等于returned。
