George Watford works at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in New York City.He gets some unusual phone calls. One day,he got a call about a mountain lion living in a small building.“We didn’t believe it,” Watford said.“But when we got there, sure enough, there was a mountain lion sitting at the front window looking out at us.” The big cat’s owner knew that his neighbours were unhappy about the animal. He didn’t try to stop us taking it away.
In one year, the ASPCA took in 9,459 different animals, not counting cats and dogs. That number includes a lot of rabbits and monkeys, but the ASPCA has also taken many other exotic (外来的) pets from people’s homes,These animals can’t be set free into the wild because they wouldn’t survive. The ASPCA tries to find homes for them in zoos or special areas for animals.
It’s against the law to sell wild animals in New York City. Many buildings don’t even allow dogs or cats, not to mention more exotic animals.Still, the ASPCA takes away most of the exotic animals not because of complaints (怨言),but because the pet’s owner needs help.A lovely baby lion or bear will finally grow up to be dangerous.“When they bite,it isn’t because they hate you. It’s because they’re wild animals,” said exotic animal expert Kathi Travers.
Travers is quick to give speeches against raising wild animals as pets.Too often people think that caring for a wild animal is the same as caring for a dog or a cat.“To love an animal is not enough,” Travers said.“There has to be respect, and respect is not taking an animal, sticking it in a little cage, and expecting the animal to be happy.”

When humans and nature go head to head, nature often ends up losing.Rivers get polluted.Trees are cut down.Natural resources are exhausted. That’s what makes the Galapagos Islands so special — it’s one of the few pristine (原始状态的) places on Earth that nature can truly call its own.
For people used to having wild animals run at the scent of humans,a visit to the Galapagos is a real eye-opening experience.Over 900 km west of continental Ecuador (厄瓜多尔),the islands are home to a unique variety of animals that have absolutely no fear of people.Visitors can play on the beach with sea lions and giant sea turtles, swim with dolphins and whales, and get close enough to the penguins (企鹅) to count the eggs in their nests.
The islands were declared a national park over 40 years ago,and the number of human visitors is tightly limited to avoid damaging the environment or putting stress on the animals.Tourists have to pay a $100 daily visitors fee,and can’t step off the boat unless accompanied (陪同) by an official guide.Once on the islands, you have to stay on the trail, but that rarely presents a problem:the animals are so curious about people that they’ll usually come up to say hello.
“It’s a little like being in a zoo,” said one traveler.“But instead of us looking at the animals, the animals are looking at us.”
Aside from the wildlife, one of the islands’ more unusual features is its post office. You can send postcards for free, but the catch is that there’s no postman to collect them.Instead, travelers pick up mail addressed to people who live near them back home, and then hand-deliver the postcards when their trip is finished.
5.The Galapagos Islands are .
A.terribly polluted
B.near continental Ecuador
C.in the Atlantic Ocean
9
D.independent of Ecuador
答案:B
解析:从第二段第二句“Over 900 km west of continental Ecuador,the islands are...”可以推断,既然作者以continental Ecuador为参照物来描述the Galapagos Islands的位置,说明该群岛离continental Ecuador很近。
6.Which animal is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Whales. B.Sea lions.
C.Goats. D.Dolphins.
答案:C
解析:该题属于细节题,阅读第二段最后一句可知,只有goats没有被提到。
7.On the Galapagos Islands the mail is delivered by .
A.the government B.the post office
C.the tourists D.the guides
答案:C

8.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Anti-Zoo
B.Humans and Nature
C.Go Head to Head
D.Ecuador — An Island Country
答案:A
