Since the first Earth Day in 1970, Americans have gotten a lot “greener” toward the environment. “We didn’t know at that time there even was an environment, let alone that there was a
problem with it,” says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA.
But what began as nothing important in public affairs has grown into a social
movement .Business people, political leaders, university professors, and especially millions of
grass-roots Americans are taking part in the movement. “The understanding has increased many,
many times,” says Gaylord Nelson, the former governor from Wisconsin, who thought up the first.
According to US government reports, emissions (排放)from cars and trucks have dropped from 10.3
million tons a year to 5.5 tons .The number of cities producing CO beyond the standard has been
reduced from 40 to 9. Although serious problems still remain and need to be dealt with, the world is
a safer and healthier place. A kind of “Green thinking” has become part of practices.
Great improvement has been achieved. In 1988 there were only 600 recycling programs; today
in 1995 there are about 6,600. Advanced lights, motors, and building designs have helped save a lot
of energy and therefore prevented pollution.
Twenty –five years ago, there were hardly any education programs for environment. Today, it’s
hard to find a public school, university, or law school that does not have such a kind of program.
“Until we do that, nothing else will change!” say Bruce Anderson.
24.According to Anderson, before 1970, Americans had little idea about ___.
A.the social movement B.recycling techniques
C.environmental problems D.the importance of Earth Day
25.Where does the support for environmental protection mainly come from?
A.The grass –roots level. B.The business circle.
C.Government officials. D.University professors.
26.What have Americans achieved in environmental protection?
A.They have cut car emissions to the lowest.
B.They have settled their environmental problems.
C.They have lowered their CO levels in forty cities.
D.They have reduced pollution through effective measures.
27.What is especially important for environmental protection according to the last paragraph?
A.Education. B.PlanningC.Green living D.CO reduction

C
It was a Saturday evening in March, just before sundown, when we heard the screaming. I was
out walking with my wife,Melissa, and our golden retriever(猎犬),Kira, beside a lake when the
peace was broken by a woman’s voice, calling out two names over and over.
We spotted her, almost immediately, three or four hundred feet away across the lake. Spring had
come but there was still snow on the ground, the water covered by a layer of ice that had just started
to thaw. Two big dogs were walking across it. They appeared to be quite old and were moving
slowly. As we watched, the ice gave way beneath one dog and then the other, plunging them into the water.
We arrived at the scene a few minutes later, but the dogs already seemed to be showing the
effects of the cold as they struggled weakly to escape. We realized that calling 911 would be
useless—the dog farther out was in water about 20 feet deep and I feared neither of them would stay
afloat long enough for the emergency services to arrive. Besides, I was probably qualified to carry
out the rescue myself. I was practicing the kind of deep breathing my grandfather had taught me as I
walked in. I wasn’t alone—Kira swam alongside me. Having Kira there was a huge support. We
were able to go back to shore quickly.
The second dog was further out and I had to pause before I went back in. That’s when another
technique I’d learned from my grandfather came into play. He’d taught me about a pressure point on
the wrist that when pressed in the right way sends out an electrical signal, like a jolt of energy. That
kept me warm as I set out again with, Kira. I maintained eye contact with the dog as we approached.
With Kira’s encouragement, it followed us back. The owner was emotional—“I’m the luckiest
woman alive!”she said.
28.What does the underlined word“thaw”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Melt. B.Shake.
C.Flow. D.Appear.
29.Why didn’t the writer call 911?
A.The writer’s dog has been trained to save lives.
B.The dogs could save themselves from the cold water.
C.There wasn’t enough time to wait for the emergency services.
D.The writer’s grandfather had taught him how to save the dogs.
30.What do we know about the second technique the writer learned from his grandfather?
A.It makes him brave. B.It keeps him warm.
C.It allows him stay focused. D.It helps him walk quickly.
31.Who accompanied and helped the writer while saving the dogs in the water?
A.His wife. B.The dogs’owner.
C.His grandfather. D.His dog.
Spring had come but there was still snow on the ground
故选 A。
We realized that calling 911 would be useless—the dog farther out
was in water about 20 feet deep and I feared neither of them would stay afloat long enough for the
emergency services to arrive.
He’d taught me about a pressure point on the wrist that when
pressed in the right way sends out an electrical signal, like a jolt of energy. That kept me warm as I
set out again with,Kira.
I wasn’t alone—Kira swam alongside me. Having Kira there was a
huge support.
That kept me warm as I set out again with,Kira. I maintained eye contact with the dog as we
approached. With Kira’s encouragement,it followed us back.

At the World Economic Forum last month, President Trump drew claps when he announced the
United States would respond to the forum's proposal to plant one trillion(万亿) trees to fight climate
change. The trillion-tree idea won wide attention last summer after a study published in the journal
Science concluded that planting so many trees was “the most effective climate change solution to
date”.
If only it were true. But it isn't. Planting trees would slow down the planet's warming, but the
only thing that will save us and future generations from paying a huge price in dollars, lives and damage to nature is rapid and considerable reductions in carbon release from fossil fuels, to net zero
by 2050.
Focusing on trees as the big solution to climate change is a dangerous diversion(偏离). Worse
still, it takes attention away from those responsible for the carbon release that are pushing us toward
disaster. For example, in the Netherlands, you can pay Shell an additional 1 euro cent for each liter of
regular gasoline you put in your tank, to plant trees to balance the carbon release from your driving.
That's clearly no more than disaster slightly delayed. The only way to stop this planet from
overheating is through political, economic, technological and social solutions that end the use of
fossil fuels.
There is no way that planting trees, even across a global area the size of the United States, can
absorb the huge amounts of fossil carbon released from industrial societies. Trees do take up carbon
from the atmosphere as they grow. But this uptake merely replaces carbon lost when forests were
cleared in the first place, usually long ago. Regrowing forests where they once grew can undo some
damage done in the past, but even a trillion trees can't store enough carbon to head off dramatic
climate changes this century.
In a sharp counter argument to last summer's Paper in Science, Justin Gillis wrote in the same
journal in October that the study's findings were inconsistent with the dynamics of the global carbon
cycle. He warned that “the claim that global tree restoration(复 原) is our most effective climate
solution is simply scientifically incorrect and dangerously misleading”.
32.What do we know about the trillion-tree idea?
A.It was published in a journal.
B.It was proposed last summer.
C.It was put forward by Trump.
D.It drew lots of public attention.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.A drawback of the tree planting strategy.
B.An example of balancing carbon release.
C.An anecdote of making a purchase at Shell.
D.A responsibility for politicians and economists.34.What was Justin Gillis's attitude towards global tree restoration?
A.Indifferent. B.Opposed.
C.Hesitant. D.Supportive.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Contradictory Ideas on Tree Planting.
B.A Trillion Trees Come to the Rescue.
C.Planting Trees Won't Save the World.
D.The Best Solution to Climate Change.
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.B 35.C

published in the journal Science concluded that planting so many trees was “the most effective
climate change solution to date”.
Focusing on trees as the big solution to climate change is a dangerous
diversion(偏离). Worse still, it takes attention away from those responsible for the carbon release
that are pushing us toward disaster.
故选 A 项。
In a sharp counter argument to last summer's Paper in Science,
Justin Gillis wrote in the same journal in October that the study's findings were inconsistent with the
dynamics of the global carbon cycle. He warned that “the claim that global tree restoration(复原) is
our most effective climate solution is simply scientifically incorrect and dangerously misleading”.
Justin Gillis
Justin Gillis

It is common that some people can accomplish very tough tasks while other can’t. In reality, no
one can always avoid difficulties in life, but the results are quite differently. The difference lay in people’s different attitudes. Some people choose to face hardships bravely. We are determined to
reach their destinations how many times they fail. Therefore, it’s just their perseverance which helps
them make it in the end. Others may easily give up to whatever obstacle they meet, which can lead to
nothing but failure.
In my view, keep on doesn’t necessarily mean success, but giving up absolutely means failures.
If we can adopt such positive attitude, we are bound to achieve more than we expect.
1. other→others
2. differently→different
3. lay→lies
4. We→They
5. how→however
6. which→that
7.to 删掉或者 up→in
8.keep →keeping
9. failures→failure
10. such 后面添加 a
故 other 改为 others。
Some people,
故 We 改为 They。
故 how
改为 however。
强调句结构“it is/was+被强调部分+that/who+其他”,句中被强调部分为 just their perseverance,
故应用 that。故 which 改为 that。
处可理解为“放弃”短语为 give up,故 to 删掉;也可理解为“屈服于”短语为 give in to。故 to 删
掉或者将 up 改为 in。
故 such 后面添加 a。

Dear Tom,
Nice to hear from you. Knowing from your last letter that you are curious about one of my
unforgettable experiences in high school, I am writing to share one with you.
When I was in Senior II, I got a chance to study in your country -- the UK for three months as
an exchange student. What impressed me most was the various activities in and after class. We had group discussions and played games with classmates to enjoy the cultural diversity. I developed a
deep friendship with many UK students from varied backgrounds, which helped me understand the
country better. Through the three months’ study, not only did I get to know the cultural differences,
but I also learned how to co-operate with others.
Looking forward to your early reply and sharing your unforgettable experience.
Yours,
Li Hua
