What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均高度的) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement(水泥) might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.

Mr Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, "if anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea."

unknown land left in the world.People didn't have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made.Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all play a big part in our daily life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909,movies with sound in 1926,the computer in 1928,jet planes in 1930.This was also a time when a new material was first made.Nylon came out in 1935.It changed the kind of clothes people wore.
The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and allowed them to live longer.By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.
By this time most people in developed countries had a very good life.Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire(渴望) to explore again. The earth was known to man but the stars were not.Man began looking for ways to go into space.Russia made the first step. Then United States took a step.Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their own steps into space.
In 1969 man took his biggest step away from the earth.Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning, though.New inventions will some day allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

海伦·凯勒的经历
In 1882 a baby girl called Helen Keller caught a fever that was so hard that she nearly died. She survived but the fever left its mark—she could no longer see or hear. Because she could not hear, she also found it very difficult to speak.
Before her seventh birthday, the family hired a teacher—Anne Sullivan. Anne was careful to teach Helen especially those subjects in which she was interested.
As a result, Helen became gentler and she soon learnt to read and write in Braille. She also learnt to read people's lips by pressing her fingertips against them and feeling the movement. This method is called Tadoma and it is a skill that very, very few people manage to learn. She also learnt to speak, a major achievement for someone who could not hear at all.
Helen proved to be a remarkable scholar. While she was still at college she wrote 《The Story of My Life》. This was an immediate success and earned her enough money to buy her own house.
