Being able to count at least ten people as friends makes us happy, but those with five or fewer are likely to be miserable, researchers say. Their study of hundreds of men and women also found that people who feel satisfied with their lives always have lots of close friends and regularly make new ones. While it is not clear whether our friends make us happy or we make friends because we are happy, the researchers say it is clear that we should maintain our friendships. Psychologist Richard Tunney said, “Whatever the reason is, actively working on friendships in the same way as to maintain a marriage is a prerequisite(必备条件) to happiness.” Dr.Tunney, of Nottingham University, quizzed more than 1,700 people about their satisfaction with their lives and the state of their friendships. Those with five friends or fewer had just a 40 percent chance of being happy. In other words they were more likely to be unhappy than happy. Ten was the first number at which people were more likely to be happy than unhappy. The happiest people were those with dozens of friends, according to the study, which was carried out for the National Lottery(彩票).
For women, this meant having 33 friends;for men, the number was 49. Dr.Tunney said,“People who were extremely satisfied with their lives had twice the number of friends of people who were extremely dissatisfied. ” Women tended to have fewer friends than men but formed tighter relationships. Interestingly, the study found that childhood friends are no more likely to make us happy than people we become close to later in life. Lottery winners, however, have a different opinion on life. They are always happier than others despite spending their time with a small

Can eating a chocolate bar every day really prevent agerelated memory loss? No. But a new research shows that large amounts of flavones, substances found in cocoa, tea and some kinds of vegetables, may improve agerelated memory failure.
Dr. Scott Small is a professor of neurology (神经病学) at Columbia University in new York City. He is the lead writer of a research paper describing the effects of cocoa flavones on brain activity. His study involved 37 volunteers aged between 50 and 69. Researchers gave them a highlevel flavones drink made from cocoa beans or a lowlevel flavones drink. For a period of three months, some subjects got 900 milligrams of flavones a day. The others got 10 milligrams of flavones each day. Brain imaging and memory tests were given to each study subject before and after the study. Dr. Small says that the subjects who had the highlevel

flavones drink showed much improvement on memory tests.
The researchers warn that more work is needed to be done because this study was performed only on a small group. Dr. Joann Manson is the lead researcher of a fouryear study involving 18,000 adults. This study will use flavones capsules(胶囊). The study subjects will be divided into two groups and will take two pills per day. The capsules used will all look the same. But one group's capsules will contain flavones, while the other group will take capsules made of an inactive substance, or placebo.
Dr. Manson says it's not necessary for people to start eating more chocolate, because 3 persons would have to eat a huge amount of chocolate to get the same level of flavones given to the rest subjects. He adds many manufacturers have planned to remove the flavones from their chocolate products. Similarly, Dr. Manson says a cocoabased flavones extract(提取)may be developed in the future. But he says that more studies are needed to see how much flavones is good for our health.
28.What was done to the subjects after Dr. Small's study?
A.They were asked to take a highlevel flavones drink.
B.They were given capsules containing flavones.
C.They were asked to take two pills of flavones capsules per day.
D.They were given brain imaging and memory tests.
29.What's the similarity of the two experiments?
A.Both use highlevel flavones capsules.
B.The subjects are divided into two groups in both experiments.
C.Drinks and placebos are used in both experiments.
D.The number of the subjects is the same.
30.Why will Dr. Manson carry out the fouryear study?

B.The more we eat flavones, the better our health will be.
C.It's not necessary for us to eat chocolate.

My mother always told us it is no use crying over spilt milk. That means you should not get angry when something bad happens and cannot be changed. She also told us you have to break some eggs to make an omelet(煎蛋卷). This means you have to do what is necessary to move forward.
My mother believed you are what you eat. A good diet is important for good health. She would always give us healthy food. She liked serving us meat and potatoes for dinner. The meat and potatoes can also mean the most important part of something. It describes someone who likes simple things.
People always said my father was the salt of the earth, because he would never pour salt on a wound (伤口), or make someone feel worse about something that was already a bad experience. However, sometimes he told us a story that seemed bigger than life. So we had to take it with a grain(粒)of salt. That is, we could not believe everything he told us.
My manager at work does not always know what is going on in our office. Yet she is right about one thing: there is no such thing as a free lunch. Something may appear to be free, but there may be a hidden cost. When we fail to see problems at work, the manager tells us to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to pay more attention and fix the problem. I once made a big mistake at the office and felt silly. I had egg on my face.

come from. __36__ Today, nearly 11 percent of people on Earth suffer from hunger, according to a recent State of Food Insecurity in the World report published by the United Nations. But it turns out that this number is something to celebrate!
Though the numbers look like a lot, the number of hungry people in the world has actually decreased by about 209 million since 1992. This has been mainly due to the hard work of organizations such as the UN, the FAO and the WFP.
According to the WFP, the world produces enough food to feed the entire population of 7 billion people. __37__ There are many reasons why food does not go from the producers to the consumers.
People living in poverty cannot afford nutritious foods. This makes them weaker and it is harder for them to earn money to escape from poverty and hunger. __38__ An average person in the US spends just 6.6% of the income on food.
Drought is one of the most common causes of food shortage in the world.__39__ In many countries, climate change is worsening the situation.
Conflicts around the world can disrupt farming and food production. Fighting forces millions of people to flee their homes. These people don't have the meals to feed themselves.
__40__ Food that is wasted uses up precious natural resources.
A.How can we solve the problem?
B.Each nation has its own challenges.
C.Onethird of all food produced is never consumed.
